 On August 14, 1862, Ben enlisted in the 116th Regiment Ohio Infantry, Company A, for a three year term. He enlisted at Jolly, Ohio & was signed up by C. W. Ridgeway, & entered the service at the rank of Corporal. Ben is said to have been the tallest man in his regiment.
 Ben's brother, Bazil, enlisted at the same time as Ben, and in the same company, along with other young men from their neighborhood, after the summer crops had been harvested. They all wanted "to go and put down the rebellion."
 Benjamine had blue eyes, light colored wavy hair, fair complexion, and was a tall man of six feet in height.
 Ben was discharged from the army at Richmond, Virginia, of the 14th of June, 1865, and returned to his home in Monroe County, Ohio.

 Cause of Death: Chronic parenchymatous nephritis
