It is believed that George Cline Sr. emigrated from northern Germany about 1770 with his father and two brothers, Jacob and John Jr. and established their home near Sunbury in Penn Township, Northumberland Co. PA . George Cline Sr. married June 8, 1770, in New York to Susannah Buck daughter of Joseph Buck, also an emigrant from Germany. They had three children before the Revolution. Like many of the pioneers who emigrated in the 18th century, it is logical to believe that the family of GEORGE CLINE SR. came chiefley on account of political and religious freedom. This is attested by the fact that he enlisted Nov. 4, 1776, volunteering as a soldier for the duration of the war for freedom. He was assigned to the 12th Pa. Regiment. This regiment was recruited mostly from the settlers on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in Northumberland County, PA. According to the War Department, George Cline held the rank of Corporal. On August 10, 1778, he was a Sgt. on the muster roll of Capt. Wm. Craig's company of 3rd PA Reg. commanded by Col. Thomas Craig. George Klaine (Cline ) is listed as a Sgt. and served from the date of enrollment, Nov. 4, 1776 until Jan. 1781. About 1791, George Cline Sr. with his family, settled near Grandview in Washington Co. where he lived for ten years. On April 14, 1801, George Cline Sr. died and was buried in an unmarked grave near the mouth of Mill Creek above New Matamoras, Ohio ( Washington Co.)

"George Cline, the father of the above names Clines, and his wife came from Germany and settled in Pennsylvania. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. After the settlement of Marietta, he moved West and settled near what is now known as Grandview in Washington Township. The first cabins were built by Isaac Brown and Joseph and William Cline in 1804."

It is believed that George Cline, Sr. emigrated from Northern Germany about 1770 and with his farther named John two brothers named Jacob and John Jr. and that the family established there home near Sunbury, in Penn Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania These facts seem very well established from the land and tax records in Pennsylvania from 1772 to 1800. From the land records George Kline took up 300 acres of land in Penn Township, Northumberland County on September 13, 1773 and held it in his name until October 26, 1884 when it was probably sold for unpaid taxes. In the year 1782 George Cline, a non-resident, was on the tax records of Penn township, Northumberland County for $1.126 as unpaid taxes on 200 acres of uncultivated land.
Enlisted November 4, 1776 as a volunteer soldier for the duration of the American Revolution. A brief account of the military engagements of the 12th Pennsylvania Regiment to witch he was assigned, indicates to some degree his dedication to the struggle for political freedom.
From a Photostat copy of the Pay Roll on January 1, 1777 we find his name recorded as "George Cline", signed "George Klain" and marked by himself with an "X".
Sergeant in Capt. Wm. Criag 3rd Pa. Rgt. Enlisted Nov. 4 1776 For "duration of the war"
  Penn 12th & 3rd Reg'ts from 1776-1781
Emigrant from Germany Sergeant in Revolutionary War.
Enlisted November 4, 1776. Was assigned to the 12th Pennsylvania Regiment. This regiment was recruited mostly from settlers on the West branch of the Susquehanna River in Northumberland County. This regiment left Sunbury on 18th of December 1776 and floated down the river on boats to the battlefields in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia. The men in the 12th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Continental Lines were good riflemen and scouts and were detailed for picket and skirmish duty. Early in 1777, its headquarters was at Amboy and the following engagements were listed:
April 12,1777 at Bound Brook Sept 11, 1777 at Brandywine under the command of Sullivan was engaged and lost heavily in men at Birmingham Church
Oct 12, 1777 at Germantown this regiment was in the thick of the fight and lost a great number of men
The 12th regiment was in Geo Washington's army that left Whitemarsh in early winter and that helped to build camp at Valley Forge. On June 28, 1778 at Monmouth NJ a remnant of the 12th regiment was nearly destroyed.
According to the War Department, George Cline held the rank of Corporal with the 12th Penn Regiment. On Aug 10, 1778, he was a Sergeant on the muster roll of Capt. William Craig's Company of the 3rd Penn regiment commanded by Col. Thomas Craig.
