Washington State Death Records: Name: Nancy P. Vanderpool Date Of Death: 10 May 1914 Place: Stevenson, Skamania, Washington Age: 76 Father's Name: Henry Shepherd Mrs. Nancy P. Vanderpool, a pioneer settler of Oregon and the Northwest, died yesterday at the home of her half-brother, James Shepard of Stevenson, Washington. She had gone to Stevenson from West Chehalem, near Newberg, Oregon, where she resided for 35 years, on a visit and it was while at the home of her half-brother that she died. Mrs. Vanderpool was 77 years old and is survived by four sons, H. T. Vanderpool of Waldport, Oregon, C. C. Vanderpool of Toledo, Oregon; three daughters, Mrs. R. E. Welch of Kelso, Washington, Mrs. Elizabeth Burlingame of Vancouver, and Mrs. Adolph Hertig of Newberg, Oregon. She was also survived by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Holtgrieve of Portland, Oregon, and three half-brothers, Richard S. Shepard of Vancouver, James S. Shepard of Stevenson, Washington and William Shepard of Gresham, Oregon. The body was brought to Vancouver last evening and will be held at Knapp Funeral Parlors until funeral arrangements can be made. (Vancouver, WA, May 12, 1914) Dad's note regarding Nancy's obituary: "The newspaper article indicates she died May 11th, whereas her tombstone shows May 10th. Considering the times, she very likely would have had to be moved by train, with possibly some red tape to move her from Skamania County to Clark County, a distance of about 50 miles, which probably would have been hard to do on the same day that she died - on the other hand the tombstone probably was very likely ordered months or even a year or two after she passed on, and it is very easy to make a mistake of one day - so I think the 10th is probably correct, but the date could be the 11th - one day makes very little difference and is very minor in comparison with some errors that creep into family histories." My note: If she was born in October of 1837 and died in May of 1914 that would have made her 76 years old and not 77 when she died. She would not have been 77 until October of 1914. A letter to Dad from James Shepard's daughter, Pearl Shepard, dated 30 December 1974 said: "Your grandmother (my Aunt Nancy) came with her sister Elizabeth Holtgrieve to visits us. She was sick when my father met her at the train and died maybe two or three days after that at our home. I was a small girl then but remember the things that happened as I think it was the first death I can remember." Nancy is buried beside her first husband, Francis Marion Vnderpool, her father Henry Shepard and her son William Lewis Vanderpool, in the Columbia Pioneer Cemetery, in Portland, Oregon.
