Note: Dad's Notes in letter 6-4-1980: William was a blacksmith and traveled from job to job in Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. He died in 1884 in the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. He married Mary Fuson and they had 10 children. She died in southern Iowa in 1849 and within 2 week he married a Mahala Vanderpool, his Neice, and they also had 10 children, possibly 12. Between 1844 and 1846 William served in the Missouri State Legislature (14th General Assembly) as a representative from Putnam Co (old Dodge County), Missouri. In 1850 he was a blacksmith in Dade County, Missouri; he also appears in the 1850 census in Decatur County, Iowa. He appeared in the census in 1859 in Davis County, Kansas Territory. He appears on the 1860 census at Fort Riley, Davis County, Kansas Territory. He enlisted and served as a Blacksmith in the Union Army during the Civil War between 1862 and 1865 in the Missouri Cavalry. He appears in the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Newton County, Arkansas. He is listed on an intruder list in Sequoyah District with 20 acres between 1880 and 1884 in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. He died on 5 Aug 1884 in Redland, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. William also lived in Campbell Co. Tennessee (1830 census), Marion and Parke Counties, Indiana, Knox (1840 census) and Whitley Co. Kentucky (1836, 1838, 1839 & 1841 Tax Rolls) and then moved to Missouri. He also lived in Greene, Putnam and Mercer Counties, Missouri, Decatur Co. IowaA, Fort Riley, Kansas, Newton Co. Arkansas, and Red Lands, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma. On 21 Oct 1891 Mahala sent affidavit to Commissioner of Pensions swearing she was in destitute circumstances, old, feeble, and picking cotton around the country in order to live. She also said she had one son who "Has fits" and not able to do any kind of labor. She gave her address as Muldrow, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. (Muldrow is in present Sequoyah Co OK, next to the Arkansas border.) Myra Gromley Vdp: My brother and I searched all over the area of Oklahoma where William Vanderpool lived and died (1884) without finding his grave. That area around Redland in what's now Sequoyah County, about seven miles south of Muldrow, was subject to spring floods for many years.
