Notes
a. Note:   Recent DNA testing has shown interesting results on the Ellison family. You can access this data by going to the link:
 http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~allisonellisondna/index.htm
It seems that previous research may be in error regarding hte ancetry of teh Ellison's of Monroe Co, WV. What we need is testing done on known direct male-line descendents of this Ellison family that ended up in Monroe County. For the time being, I will leave this data as it has been, but please note it could be in error.
The following is an email message recieved from Mary Yonan on 6 September, 2007
"We have received some unexpected DNA test results in the past several months. Two Ellison men who have VA / WV roots believed that they descended from James Ellison, although they didn't have a complete paper trail to prove it. It has turned out that their DNA scores do not match the DNA scores of other participants who trace their ancestry back to Lawrence Ellison. Instead of matching the DNA scores of descendants of Lawrence Ellison, the two Ellisons with VA / WV roots match the DNA score of an Ellison participant who traces his ancestry back to Col. Thomas Ellison who lived in Orange Co, NY at the time of the Revolutionary War.
There are currently over 100 men with the Allison and Ellison surnames who
are members of our ongoing surname DNA Project. The URL of the
Allison/Ellison Y-chromosome DNA Project Results website is:
 http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~allisonellisondna/index.htm
Group B on the DNA Results chart are proven descendants of Lawrence Ellison and of Joseph Allison of Orange/Rockland Co, New York.
Group G on the chart includes the two Ellison men with VA / WV roots who believed, but had not proven, that they descended from Lawrence Ellison.
They are ID 56179 and ID 89245. When you click on their ID #s, you will see their paternal pedigree charts. It has turned out that their DNA scores are very close to ID 30994, who tracres his ancestry back to Col. Thomas Ellison who lived in Orange Co, NY at the time of the Revolutionary War.
Participant # 30994 provided this information about his Ellison ancestors from Orange/Rockland Co, NY and the line's progenitor, Cuthbert Ellison of Newcastle-on-Tyne, England:
Col. Thomas Ellison was born in NYC in 1701 and moved to New Windsor in 1723. (His father John, b. 1688, had emigrated to NYC and begun to acquire property in New Windsor in 1718. These Ellisons supposedly go back to Cuthbert Ellison, Sheriff of Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, in 1544.)
In order to better understand whether there were two or more different Ellison lines who migrated to Greenbrier Co, VA in the 1700s, it would be very valuable to include more ELLISON males who have VA / WV roots in the DNA Project.
In order to better understand whether there were two different Ellison lines (descendants of Lawrence Ellison and descendants of Thomas Ellison of New Windsor, NY) .who migrated to Greenbrier Co, VA in the 1700s, it would be great to include other ELLISON males whose Ellison ancestors migrated from NJ to VA /WV in the 1700s as participants in the DNA Project.
If you ever make contact with a male who HAS the ELLISON surname who is a descendant of Lawrence, please let him know about the DNA Project. I'll be glad to provide additional information about how a participant can join the DNA Project.
 Best wishes
