Note:   Russell attended rural school District 9 and graduated from Ord High School with the Class of 1952. Following his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Army for a three-year period with training as a photo map specialist. He was sent to Japan following his training and finished his tour of duty there, receiving his discharge in 1955, as a Sergeant. It was while in Japan that he found the lure of mountain climbing irresistible.

Note:   He attended Salem College in Salem, W.Va., and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. While in school, he married Jeanette Haling at Denver. Following his college work, he taught briefly at Follansbee, W.Va. Leaving the teaching field, he worked for the Stonewall Jackson Life Insurance Company, Waddell and Reed Co., and Offerman and Company in Steubenville, Ohio.

Note:   He married Victoria (Vallejos) Petrakis in May of 1978, and they enjoyed extensive traveling, visiting many South American countries and South Pacific islands such as Bora Bora and New Guinea. They also traveled to Africa to go on Safari and to Nepal to climb mountains.

Note:   When he tired of the business world he established a fishing safari business on the Xingu River headquartered in Brazil at São Félix do Xingu. During the off season he would return to Nebraska to help care for his parents and prepare for the next fishing season. It was during that period that he became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Ord. At the time of his death he had been living permanently in São Félix for several years and considered that to be his home.
