Note:   He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended rural Valley County schools and graduated from Ord High School in 1937. The family moved to a farm near North Loup in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, was trained in electronics, and participated in the atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll.
