Note:   Russell was raised on the family farm. He received his education at Hardscrabble and Valleyside rural schools and graduated from Ord High School in 1937. After high school, he rented a farm near North Loup and began farming. Russell and Gladys lived in Berthoud, Colo., then returned to the farm near Ord in 1948. In 1952, Gladys passed away. Russell and Viola married at the Mira Valley United Methodist Church. The family lived and farmed in Mira Valley. In 1973, Russell and Viola left the big family home and moved to a modular home erected on the southeast corner of the farm.

Note:   Russell enjoyed ice fishing, woodworking and refinishing furniture. He was a member of the Mira Valley Evangelical United Methodist Church, where he had served as the financial secretary and was an active member of United Methodist Men. He served on the Vinton Township Board and the Rural Fire District Board. He was a member of the Vinton School Board when consolidation took place and an addition was added to the original Vinton School House Building.
