Note:   Herman was confirmed in 1884. He arrived in the US with his wife Sophie on 19 Mar 1894 aboard the S.S. Dresden, boarding in Bremen and landing in New York. They lived in York County, Nebraska. On 17 Sep 1896 he stated his intention to naturalize. He initially worked on a thresher and stacked straw for seventy-five cents per day. He then rented land and finally purchased 80 acres in New York township in 1899. In 1907 he sold that land and bought 160 acres in Stewart township, later expanding this to 440 acres, where he cultivated general crops and fed cattle and hogs. Herman was one of the organizers of Zion Lutheran Church in Thayer in 1901. He was a stockholder in the Farmers Elevator in Thayer. On 28 Jan 1918 he applied for naturalization.
