Note:   A provisional marriage certificate was issued to Friedrich Wilhelm Kohlmeier and Maria Sophie Dorothea Branding on 15 April 1853 at the US consulate in Bremen. Friedrich Wilhelm came to the US with Dorothea Branding and Carl and Caroline Spannuth, sailing from Bremen on the bark Ella on 20 April 1853 and landing in New York on 2 June 1853. They arrived in Chicago on 13 August 1853. They moved to Minnesota in 1857, where he bought 80 acres in section 31 of Winnebago township, Houston County, near the Iowa border. He was a farmer. He was elected town supervisor in the first election in Winnebago Minnesota on 11 May 1858. He held German Lutheran meetings in his house starting about 1859, with the Rev. Muckwitz leading. On 7 November 1860 he took the oath of a U.S. citizen in Caledonia, Houston County, Minnesota. Civil War service, Private, Company F, 2nd Regiment Minnesota Infantry, mustered 17 Nov 1864. He disappeared mysteriously in 1865, perhaps dying on board a hospital ship moored near City Point, Virginia, or after wandering from a hospital in Richmond. His widow never received a Civil War pension as his death was never proved.
