 a.k.a. Henry Flege Kohlmeier
Henry was born illegitimately and was baptized with the surname Flege. It is likely that his baptismal sponsor, Dietrich Flege from Landesbergen, or a close relative was Henry's father, but there is no direct indication of that in the church records.  Henry reportedly came to the US with his mother, settling initially in Elmhurst, Illinois. He in fact came aboard the Anna Louisa from Bremen to New York, passenger ship list dated 10 Aug 1854, traveling with Wilhelmine Kohlmeier and Heinrich Kohlmeier. He was confirmed in Chicago by Rev. Wunder, probably about 1856. He moved to Lansing, Iowa with his mother, probably in 1857 or 1858, where he worked hauling provisions on the Mississippi from La Crosse, Wisconsin. He served in the 5th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company K, mustered 15 July 1861. He participated in the Battles of Iuka (19 September 1862) and Champion Hill (16 May 1863), and the Siege of Vicksburg (18 May - 4 July 1863). He was wounded on 16 May 1863 at Champion Hill, permanently disfiguring a thumb. He spent some time sick with malaria in an army hospital in Jefferson Barracks, Carondelet, Missouri. After the war he resided in Lansing for a time and then returned to Minnesota. His name was changed to Henry Fliege Kohlmeier by special law of the Minnesota legislature in 1868. He was a founding member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eitzen, Minnesota in 1871. He served several local offices and as state representative of Houston County, Minnesota, 1880–1881. On 2 May 1882 he became a naturalized citizen, in Caledonia, Houston County, Minnesota. He suffered from a hernia. In 1896, he sold the farm in Minnesota and bought a farm in Jerico Springs, Missouri on account of his wife's health. He suffered a rupture in March of 1909, while on a visit at his son George's place in Dakota County, Nebraska, and was taken to the German Lutheran hospital in Sioux City.
