Text:   Ernest Kohlmeier was twenty-two years old when he was overcome by wanderlust. It was 1884. A friend of his tried to talk him into going to India. His employer, however, persuaded Ernest to go to the United States because, in his words, “In case of war you are safer there. They do not mix in with our wars.” His six-day journey on the steamship Fulda from Bremen to New York City was uneventful, as was the train ride to Dakota Territory. He landed near St. Thomas where his brother had successfully homesteaded. Eventually he preempted 160 acres in Rolette County.

Note:   Röcke Nr. 49. He was reportedly employed for ten years as a game keeper by a nobleman whose wife was a sister to Kaiser Wilhelm. A friend of his tried to talk him into going to India. His employer, however, persuaded Ernest to go to the United States because, in his words, “In case of war you are safer there. They do not mix in with our wars.” He received permission to emigrate to Dakota Territory, America, 25 May 1883. He emigrated to the US on the Fulda, bound from Bremen to New York, passenger list dated 16 Jun 1883. This was the same ship and passage that took the Bredthauers to America. His six-day journey on the steamship Fulda from Bremen to New York City was uneventful, as was the train ride to Dakota Territory. He landed near St. Thomas where his brother had successfully homesteaded. In 1889 he purchased 140 acres in Rolette County, North Dakota, another 160 acres in 1897 and again another 160 acres in 1904. Kohlmeier township and school district are named after him. He enlisted in Troop A of the National Guard in Dunseith in 1890, promoted to corporal in 1893 and to sergeant in 1902. He does not appear in the 1920 census with his family. He grew grain on his farm and had poultry and an extensive orchard.
