Note:   Or Anna Marie. Mary walked barefoot much of the way during the move from Phillipsburg Kansas to Valley County Nebraska, tending the cows, in 1882. After the death of her husband, Mary lived alone in Grand Island for many years. She lived with her son Oscar for a while, and then moved to Scotia to live with her daughter Rose. Mary died of a stroke.

Note:   SSDI gives her death date as 15 Apr 1966. The Hackel family history lists her birthplace as "Bentwater", but there is no such place in Michigan. It may refer to Pentwater or Benton Harbor, both in Michigan. However, CEN1875KS gives her birthplace as Nebraska, CEN1880 as Wisconsin, and CEN1885NE as Michigan. Keeping in mind that her father declared his intent to become a citizen at the district court in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska, on 29 Aug 1872, only six weeks after her birth, it is quite possible that she was indeed born in Nebraska. If so, it may have been somewhere near Columbus. There is a Loup Township just to the west of Columbus, and "loup" could possibly be interpreted as "bent water".
