Note:   Fred came to the US at the age of 14. He opened a butcher shop in New York City, but was unsuccessful. They locked up the shop one night, slipped the key under the door and headed west. He settled near Winside, NE. He lived with the Nehrings after marriage until purchasing his own farm two miles south and three miles west of Winside, diagonally across the road from the Nehrings, the southwest quarter of Section 8, Hancock Township. He acted as executor of his father-in-law August Nehring's will in 1903-4. He became a naturalized citizen in 1908. He moved to Whitten Street in Winside about 1923.
