Note:   Heinrich was confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church near Lyons in its first recorded class in 1880. He prepared for the ministry at the Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Illinois, being listed as a student there in 1881. He lived with his brother Fred in Lincoln County Nebraska in 1885. He is again listed as a student in Springfield, receiving aid from the Minnesota and Dakota district in 1890–1891 and from the Nebraska district in 1892–1894. He was ordained on 9 Sep 1894 at Charlottesville, Virginia. He served from 1894 to 1897 as pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Charlottesville, where he conducted the first services in English and inaugurated the Sunday school. His address was 136 Dice St., Charlottesville, Virginia. At this time, the church constitution was amended to include a clause forbidding membership in any anti-Christian society. Following a bitter controversy, some of the charter members resigned. Rev. Spannuth wrote articles for The Lutheran Witness entitled "A Good Old Age", appearing 7 Feb 1895, and "What is demanded of the Ministry in our Time?", dated 7 Apr 1895.

Note:   Starting in 1897 he served at Zion Lutheran Church in Bridgeport Connecticut. Part of his duties were to assist newly arrived German immigrants at Ellis Island in the role of the second German-Lutheran chaplain at the Ellis Island Immigrant Station. During his time the congregation bought a parcel of land to erect a church. Pastor Spannuth also served as vacancy pastor, along with Pastor Fischer, for the congregation in South Norwalk. Pastor Spannuth gave up his office after Easter 1900 due to illness.

Note:   Having attending the synod in Chicago, held May 29 to June 4, 1901, he disappeared after a year's bout with his illness. On August 1, 1901 he told his wife that he was going to Belleville to consult a physician on account of his ears. His wife reportedly found a note on his pillow that read "Have gone to St. Louis". He did not return, however, and on Sunday August 4, 1901, Mrs. Spannuth went to Belleville, intending to find him, probably in the hospital. That morning a letter reached Mascoutah from him, mailed at Nashville, Tenn., in which he tendered his resignation to the board of trustees of the church. He also stated that he would give up theological work. He was never seen again by his family and is considered to have died shortly thereafter. He in fact petitioned for and received a divorce decree in Pueblo County, Colorado, on December 4, 1902, claiming that the marriage produced no children.
