Note:   August was confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church near Lyons in 1892. He registered for the draft on 12 Sep 1918 in Tekamah, Nebraska. He was a farmer in Burt County, Nebraska, then at Kalispell Montana, first working on his uncle Fred Spannuth's farm (1900–1916 at least), Bennett County South Dakota, and finally Batesland, South Dakota after 1931. About 1943, several residents of the Pine Ridge Agency (Indian reservation) petitioned Congress to discontinue leasing land to August, saying that he threw desirable residents off the leased land and was making trouble and was an undesirable citizen. He acquired several tracts of land in Bennett and Shannon Counties, South Dakota in 1953 and 1960. He visited Europe in 1953, returning to the US aboard the SS Veendam, Southampton to New York, departure 6 Jun 1953.
