 Doris was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. In 1940 she was living with her parents and working as a saleswoman in a retail bakery. She graduated from Queen Anne High School and the University of Washington. Doris married Harold E. Schmidtke during WWII after her mom invited him home for Sunday dinner after church.
