Robert worked in his father's wholesale shoe company part-time while attending Queen Anne High School and then the University of Washington, where he earned a degree in accounting. He spent three years of World War II as a B-17 bomber pilot based in England, Jim recalled. He dropped bombs on Germany and food on the Netherlands. After the war, he rejoined his father at Washington Shoe Co. and eventually took control of the firm. He retired in 1990 and, as a devout Christian, made a trip in 1992 to the Holy Land and a year later to adjoining areas.
