 Melvin served as a first lieutenant in the US Air Force at Stead Air Force Base during the Korean War. A graduate of Queen Anne High School and University of Washington, he received his Master of Science degree at New York University in 1953. He worked 35 years at Sylvania Electric and retired as national sales manager in 1991. He traveled the world with his wife, family and friends. He was an avid gardener with a giant vegetable plot and shared the produce with neighbors and friends. A lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, most recently he was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Andover, MA. During the latter stages of his illness, Mel penned a column for the church newsletter titled "Reflections" which gave the hope of Jesus Christ to others.
