 Confirmed at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church near Lyons in 1940. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1944 and served with the United States Navy during World War II. He coached youth baseball for 22 years, served with the Lyons Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years, was on the Lyons Public School Board of Education for seven years and was a member of Hain Flynn American Legion Post No. 154 in Blair. He had worked at and later owned the Lyons Lumber Company in Lyons and worked for S. E. Smith Lumber in Blair until retiring and moving back to Lyons in 1990.
