Note:   Ernest came to the US in 1881 with his parents, listed in the passenger ship list as a 16-year-old. In 1882 he was a witness for the marriage of his sister Minna to August Eggert. He was naturalized in Wayne County, Nebraska on November 3, 1886. He was constable in Winside, Nebraska in 1887 and served in the resolution of the first court case there on January 25, 1887, a civil case involving the Krueger family.

Note:   In 1900, Ernest was apparently working as a miner in a quartz mine in Angel's Camp, Calaveras County, California. He was registered to vote there the same year. He boarded with Lemuel Fischer, a German boarding house operator on the west side of North Main Street. The Nehring family had apparently lost contact with Ernest by 1903. He was thought to have died in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
He is not the Earnest Nehring who homesteaded north of Bryant SD and moved with his family to Lahoma OK. That person was born 1860 in Osterfeldt, Pomerania.
