Note: Charles A. Heist, a teacher in the public schools of Lehigh county for 43 years, and a Morning Call correspondent for 50 years, died at his home in Shoenersville on Saturday morning. He was in his 77th year. Mr. Heist, who just three years ago was tendered a testimonial dinner by his fiends and neighbors in tribute to his many services to the community, was a native of Rockland township in Berks county. He was born there on April 19, 1867, eldest son of the late Israel and Sallie, nee Kramer, Heist. In 1884 he began teaching school in Rockland township. He later entered Kutztown Normal school, being graduated from there in 1889, after which he was elected to teach in the Shoenersville grammar school. In the meantime, he had married Alice R. Schlegel of Berks county on Christmas Day, 1888. Mrs. Heist died on June 3, 1932. He taught school in Shoenersville for 43 years, then served as chief clerk for the county superintendent of schools until his retirement three years ago. Mr. Heist's church activities were numerous. For 52 consecutive years, he served as superintendent of the Shoenersville Sunday school, and for two years more than that, he was teacher of the adult Bible class. He was a member of the church council and secretary of the Lutheran as well as the joint council for a period of 25 years. Frequently, he was elected as a delegate to the meeting of the Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania. Aside from his church work, he was a prominent figure in the community. He was instrumental in getting a branch of the Bell Telephone Co. established there, and he served as president of the Hanover Telephone Co. He was also president of the cemetery board. Among Mr. Heist's fraternal affiliations were Catasauqua Lodge, No. 269, of the Odd Fellows, to which he had belonged for half a century. He was also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, No. 5324. Surviving are two sons, Harvey L., at home; and Allen W., Allentown; two daughters, Beulah C., wife of Wilson S. Billheimer; and Hilda E., wife of Ralph Shankweiler, both of Shoenersville; three brothers, Pierson D., Fred K., and Harvey K., all of Rockland township; two sisters, Catherine Heist and Mrs. Claire Frederick, both of Kutztown; twelve grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Florence, preceded him in death. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Christ church, Shoenersville. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.
