Notes
a. Note:   After the death of his father in 1787 in Sullivan County, NC (now Tennessee) Martin, his mother, and at least part of his brothers and sisters moved to the Emerts Cove area of Sevier County. That was probably around 1795, or just before Tennessee statehood. There he met and married Barbara, the daughter of even earlier emigrants into the area. Martin was a Justice of the Peace and a Captain in the State Militia. In 1843 he was named in an Act of the State Legislature involving a Sevier Turnpike Road.
He received a State grant for 55 acres of land on the East Fork of the Little Pigeon River adjoining Frederick Emert's property. It's not known how much land Martin eventually acquired but he was involved in land dealings in the county for many years. Some reports have Barbara living to be 105 years old but the cemetery dates don't support this. She spent most of her last 20 years with her son, John. She fell and broke her hip and was an invalid in her later years.
