a. Note:   Mitchell was a Union Army veteran of the Civil War, a Private in K Company, 9th Tennessee Cavalry, 20 Sep 1863-11 Sep 1865. In an 1890 census of Civil War Veterans his address was Costner Post Office, Sevier County, TN. He apparently used both the names MITCHELL and MICHAEL. In the census records he's Mitchell, in his military records he's Michael. In a sworn statement that he and his brother, Pleasant Jr, did in 1913 (apparently to attest to his age, for pension purposes) he signed his name "Michael D. Shults". He was also known by the nickname "Whig".
