Notes
a. Note:   He was a Union Army veteran of the Civil war, enlisting in K County, of the 2nd Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry in Sevierville on 20 Sep 1863 and was discharged from the 9th Cavalry in Knoxville on 11 Sep 1865. Lydia was a sister of Daniel's step-mother , Pleasant's second wife. After Daniel and Lydia separated (divorced? If they divorced we can find no record of it!) he left the area and apparently lived in North Carolina for a time. His second wife, Mary Jane Sutton, had been a close neighbor of Daniel's in Sevier County. Mary was PROBABLY the mother of all the other children (Note that there are TWO Sarahs)! Daniel raised a child, Sarah, in Unicoi County, and his descendants there always THOUGHT she was the child of Daniel and Lydia. George B. Sterling, in his book "Descendants of Dr. Daniel David Shultz" says the Sarah with Daniel in Unicoi County WAS definitely a half-sister to Daniel's later children (we can't account for her being a HALF-SISTER unless there was another, still unknown marriage). However, the FIRST Sarah definitely remained with Lydia and married in Sevier County. George Sterling and the other descendants from the Unicoi County family NEVER KNEW about the Sarah who remained with Lydia in Sevier County until after he did his book. After settling in Unicoi County Daniel became a self-taught doctor and was a pillar of the community. Refer to Mr. Sterling's book for more complete details.
