a. Note:   Martin was a Union Army veteran of the Civil War, enlisting as a Private in Company K of the 9th Tenn Cavalry in 1863 at the ripe old age of 37. Apparently he was too old for campaigning with the cavalry, as he was disabled most of his time while in the Army. He spent months in the hospital in Chattanooga, finally being discharged in Knoxville on 17 Sep 1865. All four of his brothers were also in the Union Army. Four of his cousins, Henderson, Jasper, Allen and John McMahan were in the Army (all except Henderson perished!). His brother-in-law, John W. Rhinehart, Sarah's husband, was in the Army and died shortly after the War. His wife, Eliza, had two brothers in the Army, Eli and Marion (Marion was killed). In addition, her uncle, James Branam, died in the Confederate prison camp at Andersonville, Georgia.
