Note: There's some question and confusion about Eli's wife. Some sources have Mary and Polly as two different people, with Mary marrying John Dennis, but the censuses of 1870 and 1880 both list Eli's widow as "Mary". Eli is reported by almost all researchers to have been a Union Army veteran of the Civil War, a Corporal in E County, 2nd East Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry. However, when I requested from the National Archives in Sep 1998 any pension records based on his military service they could find none. That MAY have been simply because his widow remarried and wasn't eligible! [jrs]..
