Note: John was a Union Army veteran of the Civil War, K Company, 8th Tennessee Cavalry, serving from 26 Jun 1863 till 27 Mar 1865. Due to injuries to his spine and leg, and other disabilities, he had to resign his commission as a First Lieutenant and leave the war. He accepted a seat in the Tennessee legislature, where he served for two terms. He was an attorney, taught school, was Superintendent of Cocke County Schools, and was Clerk and Master of the County Court. In a 1890 Census of Civil War Veterans he was living in Newport, TN. He moved his family to Texas in 1898.
