Note: Perry's Civil War record was less than illustrious! He enlisted in K County, 11th Tenn Cavalry in Knoxville on 20 Sep 1863 but apparently never joined his unit. He was listed as "Absent Without Leave" (AWOL) at the end of October and listed as a deserter on 4 Nov 1863. There's nothing in his record to indicate he was ever arrested or charged for desertion but as late as March 1891 his application to have the charge removed and for an Honorable Discharge was denied by the War Department. The 1880 census lists his occupation as "miller"! Did he have a mill on Webbs Creek? His middle name and marriage date are from an old Bible that apparently belonged to Philip, now in the possession of Homer's descendants. His four children were: George, Philip, Caroline, and Oscar (the Bible mentioned above lists another son, William Bates Shultz (11 Oct 1851-21 Nov 1851). This would explain why Matilda Caroline named a son "William Bates".
