Notes
a. Note:   lip Coe, who after the war lived in Washington County, PA, and Ohio County, VA. George Coe moved from Schuyler County, MO, to New Mexico in the 1870s and rode with Billy the Kid during the Lincoln County War.
Coe moved to near Ft. Stanton, NM, in 1874 and worked with a cousin on a ranch. In 1878 he leased his own ranch in Lincoln County, which at that time was in the first stages of an all out range war. Shortly after purchasing the lease, Coe was unjustly arrested by Sheriff William Brady. While in custody, Brady's men treated Coe in a brutal manner. When released, Coe swore revenge against Brady and his men.
After the Lincoln War erupted, Coe and his cousin Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Coe joined Billy the Kid as Regulators. One of Coe's first actions as a Regulator was the attempted arrest of Buckskin Roberts at Blazer's Mill on April 4, 1878. The attempted arrest evolved into a gunfight and the death of Roberts. During the gunfight Roberts shot off Coe's trigger finger.
While riding with Billy the Kid, Coe was involved in five gunfights, including the five day siege of the McSween Headquarters in Lincoln. Coe was one of the few Regulators to escape the siege unharmed.
After the death of Billy the Kid, Coe relocated to San Juan County and married. He was later able to obtain amnesty from New Mexico Governor Lew Wallace, author of "Ben-Hur."
In 1884, Coe, with his family, returned to Lincoln County. He became a devoted family man and church attendee. He started a ranch called the Golden Glow Ranch and operated a store. He died of natural causes at his ranch, Nov. 12 1941. Burial was at the Coe Cemetery. Glencoe, NM.
In the movie "Young Guns," Doc Scurlock is shown loosing a finger at Blazer's Mill. It was actually George Coe who lost the finger. He is the author of the American Western classic ?Frontier Fighter? (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1934).
He married Nov. 6, 1879, at Aztec, San Juan County, NM, Phoebe Alice Brown, born Aug. 13, 1858, in Kansas, died Jan. 29, 1940, at Glencoe, NM, daughter of Jubal and Mary Ann (Spencer) Brown. Burial was at the Coe Cemetery, Glencoe.
From DNA analysis it appears that this family originated in the Middle East and the family name was originally Sisco.
Note:   GEORGE WASHINGTON5 COE (Thomas Richardson4, Philip3, Philip2, Sisco1) wasborn July 13, 1856, at Brighton, Washington County, IA USA, son of Thomas Richardson and Margaret Ann (Tracy) Coe. His great grandfather was the Revolutionary War patriot Phi
