After retiring from the Worcester Fire Department he had an interest in picking up orange crates from various places and cutting them up and making wooden boxes which he sold in bulk to varous greenhouses for growing tomato seedlings. This was in addition to maintaining a reasonably sized garden in the lot next to his home.
