Notes
a. Note:   RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 5, 2020
Rosalia Mazur is my maternal third great aunt, which is via common ancestry with Joseph Mazur and Magdalena Janasek. Rosalia was initially identified in the obituary of her sister.
Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent and family structure of Rozalia Mazur is sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis for the descent of Rozalia begins with being named in the obituary of her sister Agnes, which identifies multiple surviving siblings. The death record of her sister Michalina identifies their parents as Joseph Mazur and Magdalena Janasek. The basis for the family structure begins with the census records. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below.
From a research perspective, the potential for spelling variations of Polish names need to be recognized, which can result from the effects of language, gender, and grammar. Rozalia is a Polish forename, the records below show variations including Rosalia, Rosa, Rose, and Rosie. Michał is a Polish forename, and Michael is an obvious variation. The surname spelling of Michael is found as both Majkrzak and Majchrzak, and is also found with his children as Majchzak, Maychrzak, etc. Antoni is a Polish name, and obviously variations include Anthony and Tony. The surname spelling of Anthony is likely meant to be Grochowalski, but is also found with variations, such as Grochovalski, Groacovski, etc. It should be noted that Anthony and Rose’s son changed his surname to Smith.
  1834 BIRTH OF ANTHONY GROCHOWALSKI
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 29, 2020
Anthony Grochowalski was born circa June 1934 in what would be present day Poland. The approximate birth date was determined from the 1900 census.
  1836 BIRTH OF MICHAEL MAJCHZAK
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 30, 2020
Michael Majchzak was born circa 1836 in what would be present day Boruszyn, Lubuskie, Poland. The approximate year of birth was determined from the marriage record. The location is an assumption based on the marriage location.
  1845 BIRTH OF ROZALIA MAZUR
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 3, 2020
Rozalia Mazur was born Wednesday, May 14, 1845 in what would be present day Boruszyn, Lubuskie, Poland. The month and year were determined from the 1900 census, and the year aligns with the marriage record. The specific day of the month was determined from the death record, which contains an incorrect year. The location is an assumption based on the marriage location.
1863 MARRIAGE OF MICHAEL MAJCHZAK AND ROZALIA MAZUR
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 30, 2020
Michael Majchzak and Rozalia Mazur were married in 1863, in what would be present day Boruszyn, Wielkopolskie, Poland. At the time of their marriage, Michael was 27 years old, and Rozalia was 18 years old.

  1881 DEATH OF MICHAEL MAJCHZAK
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 30, 2020
Michael Majchzak died between 1872 and 1885. The approximate range is based on the birth of his daughter Agnes in 1872, and the second marriage of Rozalia in 1886. It is undetermined if he died in Poland, or if he immigrated with Rozalia and died in the USA.
  1881 IMMIGRATION OF ANTHONY GROCHOWALSKI

  1881 IMMIGRATION OF ROZALIA MAJCHZAK
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 5, 2020
Rozalia Majchzak immigrated circa 1881 to the USA from what would be present day Poland. Both the 1900 census and 1910 census list her year of immigration as 1881, while the 1910 census lists her year of immigration as 1875.

Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 1, 2020
Anthony Grochowalski and Rozalia Majchzak were married on May 17, 1886, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. At the time of their marriage, Anthony was 51 years old, and Rozalia was 41 years old. There is a recognized discrepancy with their ages listed on the index record, which could be the result of a transcription error.
The "Illinois, U.S., Marriage Index, 1860-1920" is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing: "Name: Rosalie Meichzak; Gender: Female; Marriage Date: 17 May 1886; Marriage Place: Cook, Illinois, USA; Spouse Name: Antoni Grochowalski; Spouse Gender: Male."
The "Cook County, Illinois, U.S., Marriages Index, 1871-1920" is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing: "Name: Rosalia Majchzak; Age: 31; Gender: Female; Birth Year: abt 1855; Marriage Type: Marriage; Marriage Date: 17 May 1886; Marriage Place: Cook County, Illinois; Spouse Name: Antoni Grochowalski; Spouse Age: 46; Spouse Gender: Male; FHL Film Number: 1030155."
1900 CENSUS OF THE ANTHONY GROCHOWALSKI FAMILY
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 29, 2020
The U.S. Census enumerated on June 1, 1900, shows the family of Anthony Grochowalski living on Sixth Street (Block 26) in Momence, Kankakee County, Illinois, USA. The prior household listed is the family of Rozalia’s daughter Agnes. There is a recognized discrepancy for the field listing the “number of years married,” which lists 37 years for both. The field was intended to indicate the number of years of the present marriage, but was occasionally enumerated with the number of years since the individual was first married. This appears to be the case with Rozalia, as 37 years would correspond to her 1863 marriage to Michael. There is also a recognized discrepancy with the number of children born to Rozalia, and the number of children living, which should be contrasted with the 1910 census.
The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was obtained from the Ancestry website: “Antonia Grochoalske, head of household, white, male, born June 1834, age 65, married for 37 years [sic], born in Germany (Poland), father born in Germany (Poland), mother born in Germany (Poland), immigrated in 1881, 19 years in USA, occupation is section labor, no months unemployed, can read, can write, speaks English, owns home free of mortgage; [next page and the family surname spelled differently] Rosa Grochalski, wife, white, female, born May 1845, age 55, married for 37 years [sic], 9 children born, 6 children living, born in Germany (Poland), father born in Germany (Poland), mother born in Germany (Poland), immigrated in 1881, 19 years in USA, can read, can write, cannot speak English; Enos Grochalski, son, white, male, born June 1879, age 20, single, born in Germany (Poland), father born in Germany (Poland), mother born in Germany (Poland), immigrated in 1883, 17 years in USA, occupation is farm laborer, can read, can write, speaks English; Antonea Grochalski, daughter, white, female, born August 1883, age 16, single, born in Illinois, father born in Germany (Poland), mother born in Germany (Poland), occupation is servant, no months unemployed, can read, can write, speaks English; Mike Grochalski, son, white, male, born September 1888, age 11, single, born in Illinois, father born in Germany (Poland), mother born in Germany (Poland), occupation is at school, attended school 9 months, can read, can write, speaks English.”
1910 CENSUS OF THE ANTHONY GROCHOWALSKI FAMILY
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 2, 2020
The U.S. Census enumerated on Tuesday, April 26, 1910, shows the family of Anthony Grochowalski living on North Railroad Avenue in Momence, Kankakee County, Illinois, USA. The prior household listed is the family of Rozalia’s daughter Agnes. Unlike the 1900 census which has an incorrect “number of years married,” the 1910 census does list the correct number of years which corresponds to their 1886 marriage. There is a recognized discrepancy with the annotation that it was the first marriage for each, which could be due to a variety of explanations. The number of children living would correspond to Maryanna, Catherine, Agnes, and Michel.
The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was obtained from the Ancestry website: “Anthony Grovaliski, head of household, male, white, age 75, married (first) for 25 years, born in Germany (Polish), father born in Germany (Polish), mother born in Germany (Polish), immigrated in 1881, naturalized, speaks Polish, occupation is own income, can read, can write, owns home free of mortgage; Rose Grovaliski, wife, female, white, age 66, married (first) for 25 years, 8 children born, 4 children living, born in Germany (Polish), father born in Germany (Polish), mother born in Germany (Polish), immigrated in 1881, naturalized, speaks Polish, no occupation, can read, can write."
1917 OBITUARY MENTION OF ROZALIA GROCHOWALSKI
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 29, 2020
Rozalia Grochowalski is mentioned in the obituary of Agnes Surma, which appeared in the Dziennik Chicagoski, a Polish language newspaper, from Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA, on Wednesday, August 1, 1917. The obituary names “Rozalia Grochowalska” as a surviving sister of “Agnieszka Łukaszewka-Surma.” It was a common practice in Polish for a woman to feminize the spelling of their surname, such as changing the “ski” to “ska,” which is why Rozalia is listed as Grochowalska, instead of Grochowalski.
