Note: RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated April 30, 2021 Reginald Barron and Lorraine Mary Johnson are my paternal grandparents. The initial information was originally provided by Lorraine and my parents. Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent of Reginald Barron, the descent of Lorraine Mary Johnson, and their family structure have been sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis for the descent of Reginald begins with his birth record, which lists the full names of both parents. This is followed by the census records, which show him living with his parents. The basis for the descent of Lorraine begins with her birth record, which lists the full names of both parents. This is followed by the census records, which show her living with her parents. The basis for family structure begins with first hand information, as well as the census record. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below. Based on the application of recognized standards for DNA evidence, the family structure of Reginald Barron and Lorraine Mary Johnson has been corroborated with DNA matches between their children and descendants of their children, which are listed further below. 1910 BIRTH OF LORRAINE MARY JOHNSON Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated April 30, 2021 Lorraine Mary Johnson was born at 4:50 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 1910, at the home of her parents at 545 West Division Street in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The building at this address no longer exits, and now contains a more recently constructed seven story apartment building. The birth record indicates East Division Street, which is an invalid address and in error, as the 1910 census shows them at 545 West Division Street. The "Cook County, Illinois, Birth Certificates Index, 1871-1922" is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing, which contains transcription errors: "Name: Doraine Mary Johnson; Birth Date: 13 Mar 1910; Gender: Female; Father: Emiel Andrew Johnson; Mother: Rose Caroliene Niershaus; FHL Film Number: 1288190." The "Cook County, Illinois, Birth Certificates Index, 1871-1922" is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing, which contains transcription errors: "Name: Floraine Mary Johnson; Birth Date: 13 Mar 1910; Ethnicity: Canadian; Gender: Female; Race: White; Father: Emil A Johnson; Mother: Rose C Neuhane; FHL Film Number: 1315048; Page Number: 156." The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was obtained from the office of the Cook County Clerk: "State of Illinois, Cook County, Report of Birth, Vital Statistics Department, County Clerk's Office; Full Name of Child: Loraine Mary Johnson; Sex: Female; Number of Child of this Mother: 1; Number of Children Living: 1; Date of this Birth: March 13, 1910 at 4:50 p.m; Place of Birth: 545 East Division; Residence of Mother: 545 East Division; Father's Place of Birth: Chicago; Father's Age: 23; Mother's Place of Birth: Chicago; Mother's Age: 21; Full Name of Mother: Rose Caroline Johnson; Maiden Name of Mother: Rose Caroline Nienhaus; Full Name of Father: Emil Andrew Johnson; Occupation of Father: Dry goods clerk; Reported by: Mrs. Louis Vergaret, on March 27, 1910, Residence: 1227 Larrabee Street." 1910 BIRTH OF REGINALD BARRON Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated April 30, 2021 Reginald Barron was born on Friday, March 18, 1910 at the home of his parents at 2947 North Elston Avenue in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. Birth records were not mandatory in 1910, and the birth record was created and filed in 1942 as Reginald apparently needed a record of his birth. The record lists the place of his birth and the residence of his parents as 2900 North Elston Avenue, but the 1910 census shows them at 2947 North Elston Avenue. It is likely that his mother didn’t recall the address, and it was probably generalized as the 2900 block of North Elston Avenue. The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was in the possession of my father: “Certificate of Birth; State of Illinois; Number: 118235; Place of Birth: 2900 Elston Avenue, Chicago, Cook County; Full Name at Birth: Reginald Barron; Sex: Male; Legitimate: Yes; Date of Birth: March 18, 1910; Father: William H. Barron, updated April 30, 2021 The following is an undated handwritten letter from Lorraine Mary Barron, which she sent to me circa 1989. Lorraine is my paternal grandmother, and she summarized what she knew about her ancestry. "Dear Tim: If you expected to find royalty on this side of the family, forget it! However, on the debit side of the ledger we may (just may) be related to Eric the Red, the Viking who plundered the seven seas. On the credit side the family were extremely hard workers, honest to a greater degree. Nothing noteworthy but neither is there anything possessing shock value.” “My father, Emil Andrew Johnson, was born in Chicago in 1886, lived here all of his life, and died at the age of 52. At the age of 14, he started working at Sears Roebuck where he remained until his death. He was a wonderful dad - loving, caring, supplying us with everything he could afford.” “His parents, Nellie Johnson, and ? Johnson, father, migrated from Sweden in about 1875 where they came to Chicago and worked as tailors. At that time tailor shops were either in lofts or dark dingy basements known as "sweat shops." A 10 or 12 hour day, and garments were taken home to be hand-finished at night to be returned the following day. It was piece work and you barely out a very poor living. My grandmother helped in the movement to establish the Garment Workers' Union, but she died before she saw their mission accomplished. When she was picketing the shop she worked for she became a bit too enthusiastic and hit a policeman over the head. She spent a night in jail as a result. My mother made this a hush-hush subject never to be mentioned.” “My grandfather Johnson (whom I never knew) was not an admirable character. He thought the streets here were going to be paved with gold, so he never worked - his wife and my dad supported him. He thought he was descended from the Swedish nobility and once a week he would go down the Michigan Avenue to the Swedish Counsel to see if any inheritance or title had come there for him. Guess he had rocks in his head!! My father was an only child, so that branch of Johnson's no longer exists.” “My mother's family: My mom, Rose Caroline Johnson, died at the age of 77 the December preceding your birth. Her mother was born in Germany and her father in Wisconsin. The family lived in a small town - Allenton - about 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee. It seems that 95% of the people were German, so mother attended a tiny log cabin school with four grades in one room. Evidently their education was quite good, since her family spoke very well, good readers - not worldly or all-knowing but competent at their tasks.” “My grandfather, Henry Nienhaus, (pronounced Neen-house) was a rural mail carrier delivering mail in a buggy with huge wheels standing high off the ground. He was also County Assessor and collected the taxes which he levied. Naturally this did not make him a popular figure to the townspeople. His wife, Caroline Rose Duffrin, had five children - Charles, Lena, Mary, Billy, and Rose. They were all educated by Catholic nuns - half day in English, half day in German. My grandmother died at a very early age. The kids all pitched in and really raised one another with a minimum of help from their grandfather who was not enthused about raising a family by himself.” “Charles, the eldest son, every fall worked in the forests of northern Wisconsin as a lumberjack. The logs were floated down the river, picked up in barges and transported to the mills. In the spring Charlie came back home to Allenton and worked as a farmhand. He was a large rugged man who worked from sunrise to long after sunset. Such a good person. Married. No offspring. When he had saved a sufficient amount of money he bought 160 acres of farmland in Bull Valley, five miles from Woodstock. Some of the acres were deep woods which Hazel and I played in during the summer weeks we were on vacation. He paid $10 an acre for the land and raised milk cows, which earned him a fair living and he maintained the independence he was so proud of. Grew nearly all of his food - raised chickens and turkeys and ducks and sold them to the townspeople. The eggs he bartered at the grocery store for the supplies he needed. About 35 years of ago, after he died and the land was sold, it was purchased by a realtor who divided it into 5 or 10 acre tracts and it was snatched up by wealthy Chicago people who built beautiful homes on the property. Very lovely picturesque area. The house he lived in was built in about 1860 and some of the original structure was allowed to remain.” “My mother's two sisters, Lena and Mary, went to Milwaukee and worked as maids in boarding houses - not at all like the Hilton chain or even the Howard Johnsons. They married and raised large families. My mother stayed home until she married in 1908, taking care of her brother and father. Her brother Billy was apprenticed out at the age of 12 to learn a trade, in return for which he received only room and board. The conditions were sometimes so unbearable that he frequently ran away. At an early age he became a telegrapher and worked for the Soo Line railroad in Weyauwega, Wis. The town was composed of mostly Indians who worked as guides for hunters and fisherman. Billy was a very devout Catholic and he was instrumental in establishing a mission church.” “I realize Tim that this is far from what you had a right to expect but our family roots cannot be traced back to William the Conqueror, and I'm afraid we really have absolutely no famous ancestors. Look on the brighter side now! There is no record of an ancestor being hung for horse thievery - none of our forebearers rode with Jesse James so you see thats something to be thankful for - no unpleasant notoriety. Sorry Tim that I couldn't help you." 1991 DEATH OF REGINALD BARRON Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated April 30, 2021 Lorraine Mary Barron wrote the following to Jack Nienhaus circa 1994, who was her maternal first cousin. Lorraine wrote this on a family tree research form, was Jack was researching the Nienhaus family tree. "Hazel and I both attended a very small Methodist Church on our street, about 60 people membership. We cleaned the church, raised money through dinners, etc., and truly enjoyed knowing the people so well. We didn't feel lost in a crowd. Very rewarding that so few of us could support a church, even with a part-time minister.” 1994 LETTER FROM LORRAINE MARY BARRON Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated April 30, 2021 Lorraine Mary Barron wrote the following letter to Jack Nienahus on February 3, 1994, who was her maternal first cousin. Jack was researching the Nienhaus family tree. "Dear Jack: Your letter was a delightful surprise. However, you didn't strike very fertile ground re your search for the Nienhaus roots. My mother had a very unhappy childhood and didn't discuss it often. Grandmother Duffrin died when my mother and your father were very young. Uncle Charlie, Aunt Mary and Aunt Lena had left the homestead and were working - the girls in Milwaukee and Charlie was a logger in the north woods all winter. In the Spring he came home and worked for farmers. After he married (in Chicago) he and Aunt Annie had a small grocery store. That wasn't what Charlie wanted for a lifetime so he bought about 200 acres in Woodstock and ran a dairy farm. My folks were very close to them and we spent many happy summer vacations with them.” “I very faintly remember Grandpa Nienhaus. Until his death he lived with Charlie and Annie on the farm. My Mother never spoke well of her father - he neglected our parents. My Mother and your Dad were very close at one time but something happened, of really no consequence, that spoiled (to some degree) their relationship. Your Dad was engaged to my Mother's best friend, Lizzie Nisuis, when he ended the relationship to marry your mother. How sad that this had to come between them!” “My sister, Hazel, will be 81 years old (3-12-13) this April. I'm her senior by 3 years (3-13-10) and for 20 years we lived together very happily until she developed Alzheimers. She's now in a nursing home with a very limited knowledge of who we all are, and why she's not in her own home. Sad, since she was a legal secretary with a fine mind. Her husband, Harry Melnick, had a wholesale shop in the Merchandise Mart, selling men's jewelry and accessories, 2 children from the marriage - Richard and Marlene Fisher. Dick lives in Arlington Heights and Marlene in Rockford.” “Esther Peter (Richards) and Agnes (Phalin) and I corresponded for many years but I doubt that Esther any longer has the ability. Agnes was very special - we all lover her dearly. Sister Mary Alma and I had a very close relationship. She wanted my daughter Mary to go to St. Mary's after high school but since I was her sole support I told her financially it was out of the question. She retorted "Girls from St. Mary's marry men from Notre Dame." When Mary married she married a Lutheran, but with the blessing of the church, at a Mass. Your father was my godfather, Aunt Mary my godmother. Mother somewhere along the line, when Hazel and I were very young left the church. She was never willing to discuss it and mother was a person who was not to be pushed. A good, good person with strong ideas, maybe the German influence? When she died the service was conducted by a Methodist minister, a friend of Hazel's. Your dad was unhappy, especially since Mom had told him she made her peace with the Catholic church. He was a bit bitter about the funeral, but we did what she wanted. Sister Mary Alma, since she's retired to the Mother House, now takes the name of Sister Mary Peter. Am a bit concerned since I haven't heard from her recently. Isn't it sad that we lose track of our next of kin? We could gain so much from one another, given the opportunity.” “Don't know if you knew there was another cousin Peter, who changed his name to Newhouse during World War I. He was in business in Grayslake, IL and didn't want the German image at this point. His family was very large, spread all over the state of Wisconsin - affluent people, who knew the value of a dollar. The only survivor in that family is a son. Leo Newhouse, 407 Dale Ave., Mt. Prospect, IL 60056. It's possible that Leo might have some information you could use.” “I have four children - Don (61), Jim (58), John (55) and Mary (47). Don has taken an early retirement, Jim was middle management at Ameritech, and had to take an early retirement - lasted several weeks and he's been called back. John worked for IBM for 30 years, was also forced into retirement, but is back part time. Mary is an R.N. in a psychiatric ward. Not exactly a great job but at the present time there's not great demand for the nursing staff of ten years ago. I've been divorced for over 25 years - fought against a bottle for years and when I realized at long last, I couldn't win, we called it quits. So lucky I was able to find a job that I loved and it paid quite well.” “Sorry I messed up that questionnaire. At the age of 84 I'm easily confused, but I live alone and am really quite independent. My eldest son, Don takes care of my finances and his wife takes me grocery shopping. They're really the reason I moved here, so far from Elmwood Park, my friends, my church. They decided it was best to be closer, so now all 4 are within about a 20 minute ride. It's nice but oh how nice it would be to be back home. Hazel's house was sold so there would be money for the nursing home and a care-taker. Costs about $3500 a month, but it’s really a nice place with good care.” “Wish I could have helped you, Jack, but draw a blank on family history. Best wishes and thanks for your letter - really appreciated it. What about visiting our great grandparents graves? Would that be St. Anthony's church yard? I believe the great grandpa was buried beside 3 wives - Kunigunda Volberga, third one I can't remember. Myrt should know. The last name was Sholgenhoff (terrible spelling, but thats they way it sounded.) If the church kept good records at that time it might help. Myrt knew are more than I did about the family. My dad evidently had a very unhappy childhood and never discussed his family. His mother died at the age of 52, same age as my father. He was a wonderful dad, so loving and caring. Traveled for Sears to help establish new stores - loved Sears and his job and when he died my mother kept his profit sharing stock so when she died we all, including her six grand kids had a nice nest egg. She lived very frugally and spent so little." 1997 DEATH OF LORRAINE BARRON Researched by Timothy J.
