Note: RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated May 15, 2021 Andrew Johnson and Nellie are my paternal second great grandparents. Nellie was initially identified by Lorraine Barron (née Johnson), who was the granddaughter of Andrew and Nellie. Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the family structure of Andrew Johnson and Nellie has been sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis begins with the family of son Emil living with his parents on the census. This is followed by Emil being listed as the informant on the death records of both of his parents. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below. The surname of Andrew may have been anglicized after immigrating, and the original in Swedish could be Johnsson, Jonsson, etc. It is also possible that the forename Nellie is a pet form of Nella or Ella, as this is how she is listed on the 1900 census. At this point in time, Andrew and Nellie are largely a genealogical dead end until some type of significant documentation is identified. The 1900 census indicates that Nellie had three other children, but indicates they were deceased at the time of the census, and confirms that son Emil was then their only living child. Andrew and Nellie immigrated separately, and apparently married in Chicago, but any type of marriage record has not been identified. Making further research matters more challenging, their son Emil is listed as the informant on the death records of both Andrew and Nellie, and he listed the parents of both as unknown and apparently didn’t even know the maiden name of his mother. Andrew and Nellie’s granddaughter Lorraine Barron (née Johnson) told me in circa 1989 that it might be Goserud, but no corresponding records have been identified. 1846 BIRTH OF ANDREW JOHNSON Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated May 15, 2021 Andrew Johnson was born on Sunday, October 25, 1846 in Sweden. The birth month and day of October 25 were determined from the death record below, which appears to have an incorrect year. The 1846 year is supported by both the 1900 and 1910 census record. 1860 BIRTH OF NELLIE UNKNOWN Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated May 15, 2021 Nellie was born on Wednesday, June 13, 1860 in Sweden. The birth date was determined from her death record, and the month and year match what is listed on the 1900 census record. 1867 IMMIGRATION OF ANDREW JOHNSON Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated May 15, 2021 Andrew Johnson immigrated circa 1867 to the USA from Sweden. The 1900 and 1910 census records provide conflicting dates for the immigration, and the 1867 date is assumed based on the accuracy of the other information in the 1900 census. 1875 IMMIGRATION OF NELLIE UNKNOWN Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated May 15, 2021 Nellie immigrated circa 1875 to the USA from Sweden. The 1900 and 1910 census records provide conflicting dates for the immigration, and the 1875 date is assumed based on the accuracy of the other information in the 1900 census. 1878 MARRIAGE OF ANDREW JOHNSON AND NELLIE UNKNOWN Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated May 15, 2021 Andrew Johnson and Nellie were married circa 1878 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. The 1900 and 1910 census records provide conflicting dates for their marriage, and the circa 1878 date is assumed based on the accuracy of the other information in the 1900 census. At the time of their marriage, Andrew was about 32 years old, and Nellie was about 18 years old. The location is a working assumption. 1900 CENSUS OF THE ANDREW JOHNSON FAMILY Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated May 15, 2021 The U.S. Census enumerated on Wednesday, June 13, 1900 shows the Andrew Johnson family living at 48 Larabee Street in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. After the 1909 street re-numbering of the City of Chicago, 48 North Larabee Street became 855 North Larabee Street. It should be noted that the census indicates that she had three other children, and that they were deceased. Barron, updated May 15, 2021 Andrew Johnson died at the age of 65 on Tuesday, February 13, 1912 at his residence at 2531 West Chicago Avenue in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. The cause of death was listed as pneumonia. Andrew was buried on Thursday, February 15, 1912 in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. This was concluded to be the same Andrew Johnson based on the signature of the informant, his son Emil Johnson, which sharply the signature on another document. The birth year and age conflict with the census records above. Barron, updated May 15, 2021 The following is a portion of an undated circa 1989 letter from Lorraine Barron to me concerning what she knew about her ancestry. This is the portion of the letter concerning the family of Andrew Johnson, who was her grandfather. "My father, Emil Andrew Johnson, was born in Chicago in 1886, lived here all of his life, and died at the age of 52. At the age of 14, he started working at Sears Roebuck where he remained until his death. He was a wonderful dad - loving, caring, supplying us with everything he could afford. His parents, Nellie Johnson, and ? Johnson, father, migrated from Sweden in about 1875 where they came to Chicago and worked as tailors. At that time tailor shops were either in lofts or dark dingy basements known as 'sweat shops.' A 10 or 12 hour day, and garments were taken home to be hand-finished at night to be returned the following day. It was piece work and you barely out a very poor living.” “My grandmother helped in the movement to establish the Garment Workers' Union, but she died before she saw their mission accomplished. When she was picketing the shop she worked for she became a bit too enthusiastic and hit a policeman over the head. She spent a night in jail as a result. My mother made this a hush-hush subject never to be mentioned. My grandfather Johnson (whom I never knew) was not an admirable character. He thought the streets here were going to be paved with gold, so he never worked - his wife and my dad supported him. He thought he was descended from the Swedish nobility and once a week he would go down the Michigan Avenue to the Swedish Counsel to see if any inheritance or title had come there for him. Guess he had rocks in his head!! My father was an only child, so that branch of Johnson's no longer exists."
