  1938 LETER FROM CHARLES NIENHAUS
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated October 2, 2020
The following is a a letter written by Charles Nienhaus to his brother William J. Nienhaus. It dated December 26 from Woodstock, Illinois. No year is given, but it is circa 1938.
"Dear Brother - Received your letter in fair health. Joe Krisch the ex sheriff gave me all the dope he had on the Peter side. Then went to the county court and estimated the real estate at 7000 dollars and 50 cash, but I don't think they have probated it yet - they were supposed to take it to the probate court on the 13 and appoint an administrator. I have a lawyer in Milwaukee he is going to go after Gus share. But I might have to wait a long long time before they get the cash out of the real estate. You wrote you was working on a family tree - look out that you don't get any horse thiefs and jail birds on it. You may say you don't know anything on Mothers side or Duffrins - well I don't know much. I do know they came from Baden - I knew the village too one time but right now I can't think of it. Mother was 6 weeks old when she left Germany and it took 90 days to get to Milwaukee. Grandma brought her mother and two sisters along. Her maiden name was Fifer. I don't know much about grandpa Duffrin - He died in 1885. I think he had only one brother here and he was the father of Carl and William Duffrin and John he was older than Grandpa - he lived between St Anthony and Peter & Paul. That is about all I can think of. My eye is still in poor shape. My age is against me it will take a long time before it will get well again. I quit going to Chicago for treatments - the last 5 or 6 that I took I couldn't see no improvement what ever. I am just using medicine to clear it now. We got our first snow last week - tonight it is raining but I think it will be cold tomorrow. I got about 10 acres of chuck corn to husk yet - I hope we won't get much snow for the next few weeks. I want to get it out and into the crib. It is hard to make a nickel this winter everything is so darn cheap. Emil Johnson is not as well as I would like to see him. I don't think he will have many more birthdays. His health is giving out, to much indoors and sitting - not enough exercise when he was young. His address 4856 Deming Place. Well I will close with best regards to you can Marie and the children. Your brother, Chas. We wish you all a happy New Year."
1939 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ON THE CHARLES NIENHAUS FAMILY
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated October 2, 2020
The following appeared in the Daily Sentinel newspaper from Woodstock, McHenry County, Illinois, USA, on Monday, May 22, 1939: "Birthday Surprise for Mrs. Charles Nienhaus. A very clever arranged surprise party was given to Mrs. Charles Nienhaus by her sons, Charles and Dorr, and daughter, Mrs. Arthur Holtfreter, Saturday evening. It was her birthday anniversary and she, with her husband, had gone to Woodstock to spend the evening. During their absence the farm home, which is east of town, was invaded by about fifty friends and relatives. Imagine her surprise on returning home to hear 'happy birthday' being sung by a loud chorus as she entered the driveway. In a short time the large living room was cleared and dancing was in progress. Would Delia Hobart, a former Sentinel staff correspondent, have had a story for the paper if she could have been present. The former Mrs. Hobart (Mrs. Nienhaus' mother) resided in this 100 year home for years and many a story of Ostend emanated from this historical landmark. A late lunch was served and Mrs. Nienhaus opened her gift wrapped packages after which the self-invited guests departed wishing her many more happy birthdays."
