1937 LETTER FROM WILLIAM JOHN NIENHAUS
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 15, 2020
The following is a letter written from William John Nienhaus to Walter Frens Van Veen. As of November 2020, the letter is in the possession of Janine Hanley, who provided images of the letter. Walter was the nephew of William. Walter was the biological son of William’s sister Magdalena Caroline Nienhaus and Arthur Nichols Mack, and was given up for adoption before they were married. William lists his age as 49 in the letter, so it would have been written in 1937 or early 1938.
“Your grandfather Henry Nienhaus was born in Wisconsin I believe about 1852, infact I think he was born between Allenton and St Lawrence on a farm which was his fathers homestead, about ten years ago some one tried to clear and did clear the title dating back when your great grandfather sold the farm. The name as spelled Ninehaus Niehaus and Nienhaus, it is believed that the trouble was account all he was able to write was his name and he did that too careless. He died before my time.”
“Henry spent his youth around Depere and around the Fox River Valley learned shoe makers trade he married Elizabeth Duffrin and located on a 10 acre farm between Allenton and St Anthony you know where it is. Most of the business those days was making Sunday boots. I remember the last pair he made that was about 40 years ago. Believe their first two children died in infancy, the rest grew up. Charley about 58 years old now, he worked on farms, then drifted to Milw [i.e. Milwaukee] and became a structural steel worker, he was well established, then he went to Chgo [i.e. Chicago] married when he was in the 30s during the bad times in 1908 or 9 he was laid off, then he bought a farm near Woodstock Ill where he is still located. His first wife died and he married again about 5 years ago. He looks just like me, but he is 6 ft tall and I am 5’3””
“Mary age 56 kept house at home for several years after mother died she married Gust Peter and live at Woodstock Ill. she is the one who wanted to adopt you, but didn't because she had two babies at the time. She is my favorite and also my children favorite. They have had varied luck once they were worth half a million then to 0 and now he is pulling out again and it appears will make real good. The have four girls three married and one a nun, they are all TOPS. Gust is a non-catholic, doesnt it seem funny to let his daughter become a nun.”
“Next comes Lena (Ma) think she is 53, she kept house at home for a year or so, but never got along with her father, it wasnt her fault, father was unreasonable. Then she worked at West Bend where she met Art. Think they were married about a year after you arrived. She was the most kindhearted and easiest going one in the family everything was all right, she would never fight back.”
“Rose about 49 she is smaller than I am. She also took turns at keeping house for probably three years, she was not allowed to have any boy friends, she married Emil Johnson of Chgo [i.e. Chicago] when she was about 20 they have two married daughters. The are all in comfortable circumstances. Emil nippled in the stock market for a year prior to the 1929 crash, when Rose learned of it she made him bring everything home and sell out because she did not understand about stocks and bonds and wanted nothing to do with with it, she understood currency, two months later the market crashed, so she wasnt so dumb after all. “
“Wilhelm thats me age 46 I had tough sledding in my childhood as mother died when I was 7 left home at 11. At 18 I started working for Soo Line always took the jobs that paid most even if the work was harder. Made good money and spent it. My ambition is to give my three children a better start than I had.”
“My mother your grandmother was always sickly died at the age of 45 I only remember her in a few instances. I know she had a hard life. My dad liked his likker [sic - liquor] but he changed his ways the last ten years of his life, of course some of that was brought on by paying and paying doctor bills.”
“My fathers brothers and sisters are nearly all living and he was 3rd youngest in the family. Most of them are in their 90s one sister Mrs Wenzel Heindl lives at Kaukauna Wis. one brother at Appleton several around Ladysmith and Tony. The only relation that I correspond with is Mary at Woodstock, and I must call on Aunt Christina Heindle at Kaukauna at least once a year, or else there is trouble brewing. All the uncles except one spell their name Newhouse.”
