Notes
a. Note:   RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 17, 2020
John Duffrin and Mary Anna Pfeiffer are my paternal third great grandparents. Johann and Mary were initially identified by Carol Prestin (née Duffrin).
Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent of John Duffrin and Mary Anna Pfeiffer and family structure has been sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis for the descent of John begins with his marriage record, which lists the names of both parents. The basis for the descent of Mary Anna begins her baptism and marriage record, which list the names of both parents. The basis for family structure begins with the census records, and this is followed by the obituary of Henry. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below.
The following information was provided by Carol Prestin (née Duffrin). John’s line is tracked as far back as Josef Duffrin, who was born in Mannheim, Germany, and in April 1684 in Malschenberg, Germany, he married Maria Eva Metzger. The Duffrins migrated to Germany from Ireland sometime before 1684. There were three sons (Charles, Joseph, and Peter) of John who migrated to the area of Stephenson, Michigan. They were encouraged to go there because their oldest brother Leo and his wife owned and operated a boarding house in Cedar River, Michigan, about twelve miles from Stephenson where lumbering was going full swing. The three brothers worked in the lumber camps. Leo later moved to Marinette, Wisconsin (about 20 miles south) with his family, purchased a hotel and saloon and settled. Charles, Joseph and Peter each purchased land from the government and homesteaded adjoining farms about 7 miles east of Stephenson. Charles and Joseph married sisters Mary Ann and Caroline Martin from St. Anthony, Wisconsin, and celebrated a double marriage ceremony at St. Anthony. Peter married Anne Felch. The three brothers all had large families and were close.
The German variation of John is Johann. His surname is found with spelling variations, including Dufferin, Dufrin, etc.
