Note: RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 17, 2020 Jonas Wright is my paternal third great uncle, which is via common ancestry with Joseph H. Wright and Jenneffer Downs Bennett. Jonas was initially identified in the 1860 census living with his mother. Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent of Jonas Wright is sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis begins with the census records, which show him living with his parents. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below. 1850 BIRTH OF JONAS WRIGHT Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 17, 2020 Jonas Wright was born in 1850 in Sweden, Monroe County, New York, USA. The birth year was determined from his headstone, and it should be noted there are minor discrepancies with his age listed on the two census records. As Jonas is not listed on the census which was enumerated on Saturday, August 3, 1850, this indicates that he was born after that date. 1855 CENSUS OF JONAS WRIGHT Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 17, 2020 The New York State Census enumerated on Monday, June 18, 1855, shows Jonas Wright living with his parents in Lockport, Niagara County, New York, USA. The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was obtained from the Ancestry website: "Jonas Wright, age 3, male, white, born in Monroe, resided 5 months in town." 1860 CENSUS OF JONAS WRIGHT Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 17, 2020 The U.S. Census enumerated on Wednesday, June 27, 1860, shows Jonas Wright living with his mother in Lockport, Niagara County, New York, USA. The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was obtained from the Ancestry website: “Jonas Wright, age 9, male, white, born in New York, attended school." 1863 DEATH OF JONAS WRIGHT Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated November 17, 2020 Jonas Wright died at the age of 13, on Friday, July 31, 1863, by drowning in Tonawanda Creek near Lockport, Niagara County, New York, USA. Jonas was buried in Cold Springs Cemetery in Lockport, Niagara County, New York, USA. There is a recognized discrepancy with the year on the headstone, but it is unknown when the headstone was placed. The following appeared in the Buffalo Daily Courier newspaper from Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA, on Wednesday, August 5, 1863: "At an excursion of the Presbyterian Society of Lockport, On Tonawanda creek last Friday, a lad of 13 years of age, named Jonas Wright, fell into the river, and notwithstanding all efforts to save him, was drowned." The “U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600s-Current” is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing: "Name: Jonas Wright; Birth Date: 1850; Death Date: 1862; Cemetery: Cold Springs Cemetery; Burial or Cremation Place: Lockport, Niagara County, New York, United States of America." The website contains a photograph of the headstone, which reads as follows: “Jonas Wright, 1850-1862.” The website indicates that he is buried next to his mother "Jenneffer Wright, 1820-1904.”
