Note: RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 18, 2020 Clarinda Elkins is my maternal third great aunt, which is via common ancestry with Jeremiah E. Elkins and Esther Richmond. Clarinda was initially identified in the book "Genealogy of Hollon and Related Families: Early Settlers of Eastern Kentucky and their Descendants,” which was written by Clay Hollon, and was published in 1958. Clay was the nephew of Clarinda. 1836 BIRTH OF CLARINDA ELKINS Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 18, 2020 Clarinda Elkins was born on Thursday, March 10, 1836 in Lee County, Virginia, USA. The date of birth was first determined from Clay Hollon’s book. The month and year align with the what is listed on the 1900 census. 1840 CENSUS OF CLARINDA ELKINS Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 15, 2020 The U.S. Census enumerated on Monday, June 1, 1840 shows Clarinda Elkins living with her parents in Lee County Virginia, USA. While the 1840 census does not list household members, there is an enumeration which would correspond to Clarinda. 1850 CENSUS OF CLARINDA ELKINS Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 15, 2020 The U.S. Census enumerated on Thursday, August 22, 1850 shows Clarinda Elkins living with her parents in Lee County, Virginia, USA. The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was obtained from the Ancestry website: “Clarinda Elkins, age 14, female, born in Virginia.” 1860 CENSUS OF CLARINDA ELKINS Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 15, 2020 The U.S. Census enumerated on Tuesday, August 14, 1860 shows Clarinda Elkins living with her parents in Owsley County, Kentucky, USA. The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was obtained from the Ancestry website: “Clarinda Elkins, age 24, female, born in Virginia; Esther Ann, age 16, female, born in Virginia.” 1861 MARRIAGE OF WILLIAM MOORE AND CLARINDA ELKINS Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 18, 2020 William Moore and Clarinda Elkins were married circa 1861 in Kentucky, USA. There is a discrepancy about the forename of this Moore that married Clarinda. Clay Hollon’s book lists him as John T. Moore, while the obituary of Clarinda’s second husband lists him as William Moore and that he was from Wolfe County. The U.S. Census enumerated on Tuesday, August 14, 1860 shows a Moore family living immediately after Clarinda and her parents. The The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was obtained from the Ancestry website: "John Moore, age 58, male, white, occupation is farmer, real estate valued at $1000, personal estate valued at $1500, born in Virginia; Jane Moore, age 30, female, white, occupation is domestic, born in Virginia; William R. Moore, age 27, male, white, occupation is farmer, born in Virginia; John P. Moore, age 23, male, white, occupation is farmer, born in Tennessee; Martha Baker, age 62, female, white, occupation is widow, seamstress, born in Virginia, cannot read or write." Three possibilities that exist are that she married the John Moore that was 34 years her senior, that she married the William R. Moore who was a few years older, or the John P. Moore who was a year younger. When examined together, the 1860 census and the 1880 census would seem to dismiss John P. Moore, as the 1860 census indicates he was born in Tennessee. The 1880 census The 1880 census would seem to dismiss the above John P. Moore as being a possibility, as it indicates that the father of Clarinda’s son was born in Virginia, while the 1860 The 1880 shows the Moore son of Clarinda, and indicates that his father was born in Virginia. This would seem to dismiss the above John P. Moore as being one of those possibilities, as the 1860 census lists him being born in Tennessee. 1866 MARRIGE OF JOHN JAMES SWETNAM AND CLARINDA MOORE Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated December 18, 2020 John James Swetnam and Clarinda Moore were married in 1866 in Kentucky, USA. Barron, updated December 18, 2020 John James Swetnam died at the age of 87 on Thursday, August 18, 1898 in Owingsville, Bath County, Kentucky, USA. John was buried on Friday, August 19, 1898 in Owingsville Cemetery in Owingsville, Bath County, Kentucky, USA. The following appeared in the Owingsville Outlook newspaper from Owingsville, Bath County, Kentucky, USA, on Thursday, August 25, 1898: "Obituary. Thursday night, Aug. 18th, 1898, at 11 o'clock, John James Swetnam passed from this world of sorrow, sickness and trouble into one where all is peace and happiness, where sickness, sorrow and death are unknown. And as he said this his companion the day before he died, he was 'prepared to meet his Redeemer and was ready and willing to go.' What a consolation that should be to the bereaved ones. 'Uncle John J.,' as he was familiarly called, was born in old Virginia June 9th, 1811. Consequently he was 87 years, two months and 9 days when he died. He came to Ky. with his father's family in 1819. He was married (when 29 years old) in the year 1840 to Miss Rebecca Osborne. Of this union were born 11 children, all of whom are living except one daughter, Mrs. America J. Kash, who died about 12 years ago. The 10 living are: Dr. J. Manoah, of Phoenix, Arizona; I. Newton and Eustace E., of Monterey, California; J. Neri, of this county; Harlan M., of Cincinnati, O., and Leslie E., of Fleming Co.; Mrs. L. Elizabeth Kath, of Wolfe Col; Mrs. Laura A. Kash and Mrs. D. M. Hurst, of this Co., and Mrs. Dr. O. S. Kash, of Nicholas Co. Mrs. Swetnam died on April 1, 1864. He then married in 1866 Mrs. Clarinda Moore, widow of Wm. Moore, of Wolfe Co. Of the second union were born three children: Mrs. B. F. Arnold, Mrs. W. W. Rodgers and Robt. R. all of this county. Mr. Swetnam joined the M. E. Church when he was 37 years old. He lived and died in strong faith in his Master, proving all things, holding fast to which was good. Funeral services at the home on the headwaters of White Oak and the East Fork of Flat Creek Friday at one o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. Wightman, of near Moorefield, after which the remains were taken and laid in their long resting place in the Owingsville Cemetery in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives. Jno. J. Swetnam was a successful man in all his undertakings: 1st, he made a success in his early days as a dry goods merchant; 2d, a success in teaching public school; 3d, a success in the occupation of farming, standing always upon the principles that he believed to be right and condemning that which he believed to be wrong, esteeming no man higher than he he who was an upright, honorable, truthful, honest man, though misfortune may have been his lot and poorly his condition. He was one that ruled his own house well and set good examples before his children; and no man raised 14 more honorable and creditable children than he. To prove his goodness he had already contributed to his 14 children $700 each, making $9,800 in all, and the fruits of his good example are shown in many ways and places by his family, this being one case in a thousand where the father and stepmother of 14 half-sisters and brothers and all were united in peace and love, none ever hearing of any difference made or partiality shown by father or mother; always and ever being 'My children' with the mother and 'My mother' with the children. The bereaved widow and children have the condolences of all in their sorrow. Rest for the toiling hand, rest for the anxious brow, rest for the weary, way worn feet, rest from all labor now. 'Twas sown in weakness here, 'twill then be raised in power, that which was sown an earthly seed, shall rise a heavenly bower."
