Note: RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated July 23, 2021 Jonathan Richmond Elkins is my maternal third great uncle, which is via common ancestry with Jeremiah E. Elkins and Esther Richmond. Fanny Hollon is my maternal first cousin four times removed, which is via common ancestry with John Hollon and Charity Brewer. Though Jonathan and Fanny were not related, I have common ancestors with both of them. Jonathan and Fanny were initially identified in the book "Genealogy of Hollon and Related Families: Early Settlers of Eastern Kentucky and their Descendants,” which was written by Clay Hollon (1879-1965), and was published in 1958. Clay was the nephew of Jonathan, and Clay was the first cousin once removed of Fanny. Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent of Jonathan Richmond Elkins and the descent of Fanny Hollon are sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis begins for the descent of Jonathan begins with the census records, which show him living with his parents. This is followed by his death record, lists the name of his father, and the maiden surname of his mother. The basis begins for the descent of Fanny begins with the census records, which show her living with her parents. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below. Jonathan Richmond Elkins had no children with Fanny Hollon or Susan Hounshell. One probable reason is that there are strong indications that both Jonathan and Fanny had syphilis, which can cause sterility in both men and women. The cause of death of Fanny was listed as general paralysic and insanity. General paralysis of the insane (GPI), also known as paralytic dementia, is a neuropsychiatric disorder affecting the brain and central nervous system, and is caused by syphilis. GPI was originally considered to be a type of madness, and a connection with syphilis was discovered in the late 1880s. Symptoms first appear ten to thirty years after infection, and begin with fatigue, headaches, insomnia, dizziness, and as it progresses, mental deterioration and personality changes occur. Fanny was listed as being insane on the 1880 census, and the 1900 and 1910 census show her as a patient at what is the present day Eastern State Hospital in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky, USA. The institution was known as the Eastern Kentucky Lunatic Asylum from 1876 to 1894, the Eastern Kentucky Asylum for the Insane from 1894 to 1912, and Eastern State Hospital from 1912 onwards. The cause of death of Jonathan is listed as senile pneumonia, and there are multiple historical medical journals which indicate that it can result from syphilis. Given the above combination of facts, and the ten years of more onset before symptoms, it is probable that one of them had contracted syphilis before they were married. 1835 BIRTH OF JONATHAN RICHMOND ELKINS Researched by Timothy J.
