Note: RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated June 6, 2021 Harrison Bancroft Butterfield is my maternal second great uncle, which is via common ancestry with George Bancroft Butterfield and Annie Gertrude Papineau. Harrison was initially identified in the book "Genealogy of Hollon and Related Families: Early Settlers of Eastern Kentucky and their Descendants,” which was written by Clay Hollon, and was published in 1958. After the death of his first wife, Harrison Bancroft Butterfield married Anna, who went by the nickname of Daisy. Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent of Harrison Bancroft Butterfield is sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis for the descent of Harrison begins with the census record, which shows him living with his parents. This is followed by his death record, which lists the full name of both parents. The descent of Harrison is also demonstrated horizontally by his obituary, which names his surviving sister. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below. 1880 BIRTH OF HARRISON BANCROFT BUTTERFIELD Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated June 6, 2021 The following appeared in the Chicago Tribune newspaper from Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA on Wednesday, April 25, 1917. It was reasonable to conclude this is the same Harrison B. Butterfield based on the the occupation of printer salesman. The newspaper article does not mention the timing of his relationship and engagement with Clara Shepard, other than the implication of it being after her 1911 divorce and time of publication of the newspaper in 1917. Harrison’s first wife died in 1916, and he married Anna roughly ten months later in 1917. This would mean that within those ten months, Harrison met and was engaged to Clara, and when that broke off, he met and married Anna. "Love Suit for $40,000 Adds to Heiress' Woe. Mrs. Shepard Named in Alienation Action by Wife. Mrs. Clara J. Shepard was sued for $40,000 for alleged alienation of affections yesterday. Mrs. Shepard inherited the greater part of the estate of her father, Henry O. Shepard, founder of the printing plant bearing his name. The plaintiff is Mrs. Florence M. Hull, who until her divorce a few days ago, was the wife of Harry L. Hull, a druggist at 3800 Ogden avenue. Mrs. Shepard is 40 years old and has been married and divorced twice.” “A Limousine Hostess. According to Attorney Horace Tarbox of Mrs. Hull's counsel, Mrs. Shepard has called at the drug store not infrequently and has taken Mr. Hull out riding in her limousine. The bill charges that Mrs. Shepard made promised of love to the druggist and carried out secret correspondence with him. It is also charge that on the night Mr. Hull was divorced he and Mrs. Shepard celebrated the vent with a theater party, in spite of the fact that Hull was ordered to pay $10 a week in alimony and to give his erstwhile wife his bungalow. Mrs. Shepard and Mr. Hull were both amazed by the turn of events, so they said. The protested, she at her home and he at the drug store, that they were old friends.” “Many Episodes in Life. Mrs. Shepard's life has had many episodes since the death of her father in 1903. Her first marriage was to Henry R. Brinkerhoff of Jackson, Mich., a piano salesman, who died a year later. In 1911 she married E. Claude Sack of Mendota, Ill, though her relatives protested. Things weren't as happy as they might have been and the Sacs were divorced in 1911. Mrs. Sack was allowed to resume her maiden name of Shepard. The she met a printing salesman, Harrison B. Butterfield by name, and began to introduce him as her fiancé. It cost her several thousand dollars and some of her jewelry, it is said. At length her friends broke up the match.” 1918 DRAFT REGISTRATION OF HARRISON BANCROFT BUTTERFIELD Researched by Timothy J.
