Note: RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated September 27, 2020 Joseph Worland Barron and Mary Elizabeth Wright are my second great grandparents. Joseph and Mary were initially identified by Jean Lebal and Sharon Barron. Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent of Mary Elizabeth Wright and family structure has been sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis for the descent of Mary begins with her death record, which lists the names of both parents. This is following by the census records, which show her living with her parents. The basis for the family structure begins with the census records and newspaper articles. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below. The family structure of Joseph Worland Barron and Mary Elizabeth Wright has been corroborated with DNA matches between descendants of their children, which are listed further below. According to Jean Lebal, family history states that Joseph Worland Barron was very musical and was the "key bugler with Alex Scott during a review for Grant” during the Civil War. He was a natural musician and never took a lesson, and played the violin, cello, bass, cornet, and alto horn. He was a leader of all musical activities in Lockport for serval years. 1841 BIRTH OF NOTTAGE WORLAND Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 1, 2020 Joseph Worland Barron is not his birth name, and he was born as Nottage Worland on Thursday, October 28, 1841, in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, England. Nottage was baptized on Sunday, December 12, 1841, in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, England. The “England & Wales Christening Records, 1530-1906” is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing: “Name: Nottage Worland; Gender: Male; Birth Date: October 28, 1841; Christening Date: December 12, 1841; Christening Place: Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, England; Age at Christening: 0; Mother's name: Maria Worland." The “England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975” is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing: "Name: Nottage Worland; Gender: Male; Birth Date: 1841; Baptism Date: 1841; Baptism Place: Cottenham, Cambridge, England; Mother: Maria Worland; FHL Film Number: 1040455." Nottage Worland was born out of wedlock to Maria Worland. As shown above, his 1841 baptism record lists him as Nottage Worland, his unwed mother Maria Worland, and does not list a father. When Nottage was nearly two years old, Maria Worland married Joseph Stockbridge Barron on August 5, 1843, in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, England. As shown further below, the 1851 census lists Nottage Worland as the “son in law” of Joseph Stockbridge Barron, which is an archaic term for step son. The family immigrated to America circa 1853. At some point during this timeframe, his name was changed from Nottage Worland to Joseph Worland Barron, which is how he appears in all records beginning with and subsequent to the 1855 census. As the identify of his father is unknown, I elected to take a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test from FamilyTreeDNA during early 2019, as I was already curious and interested in taking this particular test. The Y-DNA test can only be taken by males, and it examines the Y-Chromosome which is passed from father to son, male to male, generation by generation. Matches with a Y-DNA test enable potentially identifying a common paternal ancestor. As stated above, Joseph Worland Barron’s birth name was Nottage Worland, so his forename was Nottage. The immediate and most intriguing result from the Y-DNA test is that my two closest matches both carry the Nottage surname. The combination of those two facts provides a very strong supporting case that Nottage was the surname of the father. Was the forename chosen because the man did not want to marry Maria? Was it chosen because he was already married, and denied the child was his? With either of these possibilities, the selection of the forename certainly would have been an “in your face” response, and it surely would have led to village gossip as to which Nottage was the father. There are multiple men with the Nottage surname in the Cottenham at this timeframe. The two DNA matches with the Nottage surname have not responded to e-mail inquiries, and I’m hoping to research their ancestry in the future, so as to potentially identify a common Nottage ancestor. 1843 BIRTH OF MARY WRIGHT Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated September 27, 2020 The family structure of Joseph Worland Barron and Mary Elizabeth Wright has been corroborated with autosomal DNA (atDNA) matches between their descendants. The descent of each match was researched using records and documentation that meet recognized genealogical standards of proof, and the autosomal DNA (atDNA) matches were then carefully analyzed and applied within that context. Unless indicated otherwise, each match includes an amount of shared DNA, which is measured in centimorgans (cM), that corresponds with expected DNA matching norms of the actual relationship. The following attributes are listed with each DNA match below. First, the names of the DNA matching descendants. Second, the actual relationship between the DNA matching descendants. Third, the DNA test provider and the test type. Fourth, if available, the longest DNA segment before any algorithms are applied. Fifth, if available, the unweighted shared DNA before any algorithms are applied. Sixth, the amount of shared DNA and the number of segments. Seventh, statistics from the Shared cM Project at DNA Painter, including the average amount of centimorgans (cM) for the actual relationship, the normal range of centimorgans (cM) for the actual relationship, and the probability of the actual centimorgans (cM) corresponding to the actual relationship. Lastly, any comments pertaining to the analysis of the DNA matching. The following descendants of their children Ida Amelia Barron and William Henry Barron have been corroborated with autosomal DNA (atDNA) matching. The first name listed descends from Ida and the second name descends from William. The matches are listed in order of the amount of shared DNA.
