  GENERAL NOTES
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated April 10, 2014
All of the following information originates from "Nienhaus Family History and Genealogy." Gertrude was also known as "Anna" and "Catharina." She never married. The 1910 Outagamie County/Appleton City Wisconsin Directory lists Anna to a border at 23 Sherman Place, Appleton, Outgamie County, Wisconsin. She worked as a housekeeper for a Father Schilling in Holy Angels rectory in Darboy, Wisconsin. When Father Schilling died, Gertrude lived in Appleton until she could no longer care for herself. She then went to the McCormick home in Green Bay, Brown County, Wisconsin, where she died. Father Schilling had left money to this home when it was built so they would take care of Gertrude when she was too old to live alone. When she died, members of the Heindl family attended the funeral. Some of the information regarding Anna's job, residence, and retirement comes from a letter from Magdalene Heindl Kieffer to Janet Heindl in September 1977. Magdalene made no comment in the letter regarding her aunt's first name. The death record and findings at the libraries substantiates what Magdalene wrote. There is nothing to explain why she appeared as Gertrude or Catharina in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Wisconsin census records. She was referred to as Gertrude in a letter dated December 13, 1938 to William J. Nienhaus from Magdalene Heindl Kieffer.

  1922 DEATH OF GERTRUDE NIENHAUS
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated April 10, 2014
All of the following information originates from "Nienhaus Family History and Genealogy." Gertrude's December 11, 1922 death is recorded with the Register of Deeds Office, Brown County, Green Bay, Wisconsin, Volume 24, page 869, and the record also gives her birth date. The portion of the death record giving place of burial, is torn torn off, except the word, DePere. Based on the location of the two Catholic cemetaries in DePere, Brown County, most likely she is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, South Erie Street, east of Highway 57. The headstone, if any, could not be located. The old cemetery records were destroyed.
