“E. Barron; Los Angeles, Cal.; C/O R.B. Baines; Chief Eng; Santa Fe R.R. San Bernardino, Cal. June 22/04. Dear Sister, I received your ever welcome letter also one from Jennifer and one from Godfrey Michell. I am very sorry to hear that you feel home sick, for I know what is is lately. I can tell by your letter that you are homesick. You said in your letter that you wondered whether we would all be together again. Why, of course we will. I am not going to stay out where all my life, without coming home once in a while. Jenneffer writes me that father still suffers with his rheumatism. It is awful, to think that a man at his age has to suffer so. He out to be here in California where it is dry than he could enjoy living. I know that you could get a position here in Cal. As good as you have there and Bertha could get a school here and earn more than she can in Lockport. We could all live cheaper out here as we could raise all of our vegetables, the year round and father could earn as much as he can at home. The folks have not ties to bind them to Lockport. If they could only enjoy one winter in Southern Cal. They would not want to live in the east again. Now just think. While you people were walking through snow up to your wastes [sic[ and mud and water to your shoe tops I was out here walking in any shirt sleeves and enjoying a beautiful warm day. One can go out there after a heavy rain and walk on dry ground as the soil is sandy there this section. Ida, I wish that we could get the folks started. If you or Bertha could only come out there you could see for yourselves and I know that you wouldn't say anything against Cal. I just got back from Orange this P.M. Well, Ida, as I have to write a couple of more letters and it is now after eight I will say, good night. Hoping to hear from you soon. I remain your brother Ernie.”
