Note: RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 1, 2020 John Maisel and Mary Schwartz are my maternal second great grandparents. John and Mary were initially identified on the death record of their son Stanley Maisel, and indicates that that all three were born in Odolanów, Poland. Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent of John Maisel and Mary Schwartz and family structure has been sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis for the descent of John begins with his marriage record, which lists the names of both parents. This is followed the his death record, which lists the name of his father, a city directory listing, which shows him living with his brother, and the death record of his brother which identifies their mother. The basis for the descent of Mary begins her death record, which lists the names of both parents. This is followed by her marriage record, which also names both of her parents. The basis for the family structure begins with the census records and obituaries. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below. Jan is a Polish name, Johann is a German variation, John is the English variation, and all three variations are found on documentation and records. Marya is Polish name, Marianna is a German variation, Mary, Maria, and Marie are other common English variations, and all variations are found on documentation and records. The various spellings of his surname include Maisel, Meisel, Meizer, and Majsel. The spelling of Mary’s maiden name could vary as Schwartz, Szwarz, and Shwartz. There is conflicting information on whether John could read and write, or whether he could speak English, and the records indicate that Mary spoke only Polish. John Maisel and Mary Schwartz were both born and married in what would be present day Odolanów, Wielkopolskie, Poland. The present day population is about 5,000 residents. The 1896 departure record from Hamburg is in German, and lists the town as Adelnau, which is the German spelling for Odolanów. The record also references a secondary location of Posen, which was a province of Prussia, and part of the German Empire. It should be noted that the journey from Odolanów to Hamburg is over 400 miles. The 1900 Census indicates that they had a total of seven children, which implies the other two would have died in Odolanów before their 1896 departure. 1849 BIRTH OF JOHN MAISEL Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 1, 2020 John Maisel was born on Friday, October 12, 1849, in what would be present day Odolanów, Wielkopolskie, Poland. The birth date was determined from his death record. The birth location was determined from the death record of his son Stanley Maisel, and is also inferred from the 1896 passenger listing of Mary and their children. 1854 BIRTH OF MARY SCHWARTZ Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 1, 2020 Mary Schwartz was born circa 1854, in what would be present day Odolanów, Wielkopolskie, Poland. The approximate birth year was determined from her headstone, and the approximate year varies wildly on the records below. The birth location was determined from the death record of her son Stanley Maisel, and is also inferred from the 1896 passenger listing of Mary and their children. 1876 MARRIAGE OF JOHN MAISEL AND MARY SCHWARTZ Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 1, 2020 John Maisel and Mary Schwartz were married in 1876, in what would be present day Odolanów, Wielkopolskie, Poland. The index listing from the civil registry appears to contain a transcription error concerning the age or birth year of John, and does not correspond to the index listing from the Catholic parish. The Poznan Project webiste contains the following indexed listing: "Catholic parish: Odolanów [Adelnau]; Entry: M-13/1876; Groom: Joannes Majsel (26 years old); Bride: Marianna Schwarz (20 years old)." The Poznan Project webiste contains the following indexed listing: “Civil registry: Odolanów [Adelnau]; Entry 15 / 1876; Groom: Johann Meisel (born 1859), father: August Meisel, mother: Hedwig Przyjemsk; Bride: Marie Schwarz (born 1856), father: Andreas Schwar, mother: Rosalie.” 1890 ARRIVAL OF JOHN MAISEL Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 1, 2020 John Maisel immigrated to the USA circa 1890, which is based information on the census records. Any departure record or arrival record has not yet been identified, which probably due to the numerous variations in spellings of both his forename and surname. 1896 CITY DIRECTORY OF JOHN MAISEL Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 1, 2020 The “U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989” is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing, which shows brothers John and Aegidius living at the same address: "Name: John A Maisel, Residence Year: 1896, Street address: 677 Frederick av, Residence Place: Detroit, Michigan, USA, Occupation: Molder, Publication Title: Detroit, Michigan, City Directory, 1896." The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was typewritten, and obtained from the Ancestry website: "Egidius Maisel, lab, h 677 Frederick av.; John A Maisel, molder, bds 677 Frederick av." 1896 IMMIGRATION OF THE MARY MAISEL FAMILY Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 1, 2020 Mary Maisel and her children immigrated to the USA in 1896, leaving their home in what would be present day Odolanów, Wielkopolskie, Poland. Their voyage was on a ship called the Amalfi, which departed from the port of Hamburg on Wednesday, February 12, 1896. At the time of their departure, both Odolanów and Hamburg were part of the German Empire, so the departure record is written in German and contains German spellings of names and locations (i.e. Odolanów is listed as Adelnau). The voyage took twenty days, and the ship arrived on Tuesday March 3, 1896, at the port of New York, New York, USA. The “Hamburg Passenger Lists, 1850-1934” is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing: "Name: Maria Maisel; Departure Date: 12 Feb 1896; Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856; Age Year: 40; Gender: weiblich (Female); Family: Household members; Relationship: Frau (Wife); Residence: Adelnau, Posen; Ship Name: Amalfi; Captain: Jürgensen; Shipping Line: Rob. The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was a typewritten form with handwritten information in German, and obtained from the Ancestry website: ‘Maria Maisel, age 40, gender: Weiblich (Female), residence: Adelnau, Posen, accommodation: Zwischendeck (Steerage); Stanislaus Maisel, age 15, gender: Männlich (Male), residence: Adelnau, Posen, accommodation: Zwischendeck (Steerage); Helene Maisel [this is very hard to read, but Ancestry transcribed it has Helene, but the arrival says Maria], age 11, gender: Weiblich (Female), residence: Adelnau, Posen, accommodation: Zwischendeck (Steerage); Franz Maisel, age 8, gender: "Männlich" (Male), residence: Adelnau, Posen, accommodation: Zwischendeck (Steerage); Pelagia Maisel, age 4, gender: Weiblich (Female), residence: Adelnau, Posen, accommodation: Zwischendeck (Steerage)." The “New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957” is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing: “ Name: Maria Maisel; Arrival Date: 3 Mar 1896; Birth Year: abt 1856; Age: 40; Gender: Female; Ethnicity / Race / Nationality: Galizian (Galician); Port of Departure: Hamburg; Port of Arrival: New York, New York; Ship Name: Amalfi." The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was a typewritten form with handwritten information, and obtained from the Ancestry website: "Maria Maisel, age 40, female, calling: wife, native country: Germany, intended destination: Chicago, point of embarkation: Hamburg; Franz Maisel, age 8, male, calling: none, native country: Germany, intended destination: Chicago, point of embarkation: Hamburg; Pelagia Maisel, age 4, female, calling: none, native country: Germany, intended destination: Chicago, point of embarkation: Hamburg; Stanislaw Maisel, age 15, male, calling: none, native country: Germany, intended destination: Chicago, point of embarkation: Hamburg; Maria Maisel [the departure record names her as Helene], age 11, female, calling: none, native country: Germany, intended destination: Chicago, point of embarkation: Hamburg." The Amalfi was launched on May 7, 1881 by M. Pearse & Company of Stockton. The ship was 2,345 gross tons, was 300.5 feet in length, had a beam of 36.1 feet, had one funnel, three masts, a single screw, had a speed of 11 knots, and was constructed of iron. There was accommodation for 600 third class passengers. She initially sailed on a route service from Hamburg to Australia. The Rob M. Sloman company took ownership of the ship in 1886 for the newly formed Union Line. Her first route service voyage from Hamburg to New York was on May 19, 1886, and the last service of this route was July 27, 1898. The ship was sold in 1911 to Sweden and renamed the Ada. During World War I, the ship was torpedoed and sunk on June 9, 1917 by the German submarine U61, while east of Fair Isle. 1900 CENSUS OF THE JOHN MAISEL FAMILY Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 1, 2020 John Maisel became a naturalized citizen of the USA on Saturday, September 13, 1902. The naturalization record lists an address of 17 Troy Street, which appears to be either a transcription error or possibly an error resulting from a language barrier, as there is conflicting information as to whether he spoke English. During the street renumbering of Chicago in 1909, 17 Fry Street became 1221 West Fry Street. The identify of the witness H. Maisel is unknown at this time.
