  The following was published in the New Canaan Advertiser newspaper from New Canaan, Connecticut, on November 21, 2017: “Bernard J. Rafferty, a faithful Catholic servant and devoted husband, passed away Nov. 19 after a brief illness. The New Canaan resident was 89. Born in Philadelphia on Oct. 4, 1928, he was the son of Bernard Rafferty and Mary Ann Owens. He graduated from Roman Catholic High School in three years, then attended Villanova University. He enlisted with the U.S. Army in 1946, beginning in the infantry. He went on to serve with the 82nd Airborne Division and the Counter Intelligence Corps following World War II. After service, he returned home to Philadelphia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and Economics from Villanova. He wed Joan E. McDonnell on July 22, 1950, and together they raised five children and were married for 67 years. He spent more than 40 years with Colgate-Palmolive, rising to Vice President. Bernard had a passion for travel and planning trips all over the globe. Together, he and Joan explored Ireland, Italy, Paris, Poland and dozens of other locations. To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, he brought his children and grandchildren to Ireland for a two-week tour to discover cities from Dublin to Galway and retrace communities tied to family history. He was a student of history and an avid football and basketball fan. A lifelong Catholic, Bernard was an active parishioner at St. Aloysius Church, where he participated in numerous ministries. He was a regular altar server at Mass, brought meals to the homebound through Meals on Wheels, and served as a Eucharistic minister. He was a Knight with the Order of Malta and was honored by the Diocese of Bridgeport as a recipient of the Saint Augustine Medal. Bernard is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter Sheila Civale and her husband Cosmo Civale; daughter Denise Rafferty and husband Timothy Barron; daughter Siobhan Thompson and husband William Thompson; son Bernard Rafferty and wife Sheri Rafferty; and daughter Meghan Weldon and husband Kent Weldon. He had nine grandchildren: Noreen Gillespie Connolly, Sean Gillespie, William Thompson, Meghan Thompson, Joan Thompson, Caitlin Weldon, William Weldon, Jack Weldon and Kevin Weldon. He was also great-grandfather to four. A visitation will be held at Hoyt Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 10:00 A.M. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Aloysius Church or Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.”
