Notes
a. Note:   RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 8, 2020
James Buchanan Hollon and Isabellah Caroline Elkins are my maternal second great grandparents. James and Caroline were initially identified in the book "Genealogy of Hollon and Related Families: Early Settlers of Eastern Kentucky and their Descendants,” which was written by Clay Hollon, and was published in 1958. Clay was their son.
Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent of James Buchanan Hollon and Caroline Elkins and family structure has been sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. The basis for the descent of James begins with his birth record, which names both parents. This is followed by his death records, which lists the full names of both parents. The basis for the descent of Caroline begins her birth record, which list the names of both parents. The basis for the family structure begins with the census records and obituaries. This has been subsequently supported with the additional interlocking records and documentation listed further below.
Caroline's brother, Jonathon R. Elkins, married Fanny Hollon, who is the first cousin of James Buchanan Hollon. James was commonly known as "Buck" and "Uncle Buck." He had various occupations including as a farmer, selling trees, lumber dealer, and Court Clerk of Wolfe County, Kentucky. His religious affiliation was as a Methodist, and his political affiliation was as a Democrat. According to an entry written by Capt. James I. Hollon in "Early and Modern History of Wolfe County," James was the Wolfe County Court Clerk several times, the first of which was 1890. In 1989, James's daughter, Ruth Hollon Condon, indicated that he went to Oklahoma because of the lack of opportunity in the Wolfe County area, and that he later returned to Kentucky because of an eye condition. She indicated that he had cataracts, and was treated by Dr. DeWeiss in Lexington, Kentucky, but eventually went blind. Assuming that this is accurate, then the 1942 letter below is not his handwriting.
  1857 BIRTH OF CAROLINE ELKINS
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 8, 2020
Isabellah Caroline Elkins was born on Saturday, April 17, 1858, in what would be present day Wolfe County, Kentucky, USA. At the time of her birth, the location was part of Owsley County. Wolfe County was later formed on March 5, 1860, from portions of Breathitt County, Morgan County, Owsley County, and Powell County. There is a discrepancy with her data of birth, as her death record and headstone list April 14, 1858.
This record shows her full name at birth as Isabellah Caroline Elkins, but this is the only record that ever uses the name Isabellah. Some unsourced online family trees list her name as Caroline Cordelia Elkins, but there are no records or documentation that ever show her with the name Cordelia. Two years later beginning with the 1860 census, all subsequent records only list her as Caroline.
The “Kentucky, Birth Records, 1852-1910” is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing: "Name: Isabellah C Elkins; Birth Date: 17 Apr 1858; Birth County: Owsley; Ethnicity: White; Gender: Female; Father's Name: Jeremiah Elkins; Mother's name: Esther Richmond; County of Residence: Owsley."
The following information was transcribed from the actual document, which was a typewritten form with handwritten information, and obtained from the Ancestry website: "Date of Birth: April 17th, 1858; Name of Child: Isabellah C.  Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 8, 2020
The following appeared in The Citizen newspaper from Howard, Elk County, Kansas, USA, on Friday, September 2, 1881: "Buck Hollon, well known to most of our citizen, returns from New Mexico a few days ago. He was waylaid at Albuquerque by two foot pads who seized him ere he could draw his revolver and robbed him of his watch and $281.00 in money."
1891 NEWSPAPER MENTION OF JAMES BUCHANAN HOLLON
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 8, 2020
The following appeared in the Hazel Green Herald newspaper from Hazel Green, Wolfe County, Kentucky, USA, on Friday, October 2, 1891, in the "Campton Currency" section: "J. B. Hollon, our efficient County Court Clerk, who has been sick for some time, is improving rapidly."
  1891 DEATH OF CAROLINE HOLLON
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 8, 2020
Isabellah Caroline Hollon died at the age of 33, on Sunday, October 11, 1891, in Wolfe County, Kentucky, USA. Caroline was buried in the Old Campton Burying Ground in Campton, Wolfe County, Kentucky. Some unsourced family trees incorrectly state that Caroline died while giving birth to her son Wenden Earl Holon, and that he was stillborn. As is demonstrated with newspaper articles and their headstones, Caroline died about two weeks after the birth of Wenden, and Wenden died at the age of about five months. There is a discrepancy with the newspaper article, which says that she died on Saturday night at 11 p.m., which would have been October 10th.
The following appeared in the Hazel Green Herald newspaper from Hazel Green, Wolfe County, Kentucky, USA, on Friday, October 16, 1891, page 5: "The wife of our efficient County Court Clerk, J.B. Hollon, died Saturday night at eleven o'clock, of fever. She is now basking in the sunshine of happiness on Elysian fields where the flowers bloom forever. She was a loving wife and affectionate mother, loved by all who knew her. The bereaved family has the sympathy of this entire community."
The “U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600s-Current” is a historical record collection from the Ancestry website, and contains the following indexed listing: "Name: Caroline Cordelia Hollon; Maiden Name: Elkins; Birth Date: 14 Apr 1858; Birth Place: Breathitt County, Kentucky, United States of America; Death Date: 11 Oct 1891; Death Place: Wolfe County, Kentucky, United States of America; Cemetery: Old Campton Burying Ground; Burial or Cremation Place: Campton, Wolfe County, Kentucky, United States of America; Children: Weden Earl Hollon, Clay Hollon." The headstone reads as follows: "Caroline, Wife of J.B. Hollon, Born April 14, 1858, Died Oct 11, 1891." It should be noted that her birth record lists April 17, 1858, while the headstone lists April 14, 1858.
1892 NEWSPAPER ARTICLES ON JAMES BUCHANAN HOLLON
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 8, 2020
The following appeared in the Mt. Sterling Advocate newspaper from Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County Kentucky, on Tuesday, June 21, 1892: "A number of friends of Hon. J. B. Hollon, of Campton, from several parts of the district, were in the city yesterday pressing him to become a candidate for Congress. He, even in the face of the very flattering persistency of his friends declined, for the the present to give an answer to their request. Mr. Hollon is at present County Clerk of Wolfe county, and non man within its bounds has more or warmer friends than he, and should he conclude to make the race, we are assured, by those who claim to be in possession of the facts, that he will be in it to win. His friends seem thoroughly in earnest that he shall announced himself as a representative in the next Congress."

The following appeared in the Hazel Green Herald newspaper from Hazel Green, Wolfe County, Kentucky, USA, on August 20, 1896. The article was provided via the research of Sandra Lassen, and was an announcement of Buck's candidacy for the Office of County Judge of Wolfe County.
"Buck Hollon, present county court clerk, is a candidate for the office of county judge of Wolfe county, subject to the action of the Democratic party, and his announcement appears in this issue. Mr. Hollon has made an acceptable clerk, and his experience in that capacity qualifies him to a large extent for the office he is now seeking. Besides his experience he is gentleman of good common sense, a judge of the law and a man of reason. What more can one desire in a probate judge? If nominated and elected he will make the county a dignified executive officer, and should he ever err in his judgment at any time it will be on the side of mercy. This is demonstrated almost daily is the fact that "he carries his heart in his hand," an his purse is always open to those whose poverty appeals to him. In brief, Buck will be a model judge in all respects, and to the dear people of the county we earnestly appeal that he may have their suffrage."

The following appeared in the Hazel Green Herald newspaper from Hazel Green, Wolfe County, Kentucky, USA, on Thursday, November 11, 1909, on page 3. The article was originally identified in the research of Sandra Lassen.
"On Saturday and Sunday, November 6 and 7, the surviving children of John and Polly Hollon met on Holly Creek at the homes of Amanda, Nathan and T.C. Hollon and enjoyed a most pleasant reunion as this is the first time in about forty years that they have all been together at once, and J.B. Hollon, one of the number, says that only those who have had the pleasure of attending similar gatherings can imagine the pleasure and satisfaction that all enjoyed. Those of the immediate family present were: Mrs. Bettie Terrill, widow of the late J.H. Terrill, Holly; G.W. Hollon and wife, Newkirk, Okla.; J.D. Hollon and wife, Stillwater; Wm. Hollon and wife, J.A. Sewell and wife, Lane; S.H. Hurst, Jackson; A.J. Hollon and daughter, Mrs. Lou Graham, Jeffersonville; Mrs. Fannie Perkins and J.B. Hollon, Hazel Green; D.B. Hollon and wife, Campton; Mrs. Amanda Hollon, widow of Nathan Hollon, and her sons, John B., Thos. C. and wife, Nathan and wife, and her daughter, Malissa, and her sister, Mrs. Martha Murphy, of Grassy, were present, so it was a reunion of two families in one as all of Mrs. Amanda Hollon's sisters, but one, were there. Saturday night all enjoyed the hospitality of Mrs. Hollon and Nathan and wife, and Sunday for dinner all went to Thos. C. Hollon's where he and his estimable wife seated his six uncles and three aunts at the dinner table, which, like his mother's and Nathan's was heavily loaded of good things to eat, and it was agreed by all at the table that never in life had all the nine eaten together at the same time. It was unanimously agreed that the family have an annual reunion on the 12th and 15th of October, each year, and the writer hopes that at our next reunion he may have the pleasure of meeting all that were present on last Sunday, and that words spoken, and impressions made of that day will rebound to the good of us all. Hollon, of Hazel Green, Wolfe county, has entered the race for Representative from the Powell-Wolfe district. He was in Clay City Thursday making acquaintances and left his announcement for The Times as it appears in this issue. We were very favorably impressed with the appearance of Mr. Hollon, and the brief interview we had with him was sufficient to convince us of his qualification for the office he is seeking at the hands of the people. We as our readers to weigh well the merits of Mr. Hollon's candidacy with that of his announced opponent, Mr. Stamper, and vote for the one they consider the best man and democrat."
The following appeared in the Clay City Times newspaper from Clay City, Kentucky, USA, on Thursday, July 10, 1919: "Announcement. To the Democrats of Powell and Wolfe counties: Many of you are my witnesses that it was with some degree of reluctance that I, through and by your earnest and urgent solicitations became a candidate for Representative from this, the 94th District of Kentucky. I hesitated, not because I have not a high ambition to represent the people who know me best in the next Legislature, nor because I had any doubt as to whether or not I could win the nomination and election, but because of the fact that I dreaded to engage in a hot and hard contest to procure the nomination. Fellow citizens, you have called me to battle. I have answered the call, and let nee beseech you to rally to my aid, and don't let designing men mislead you and poison your minds against me through promises that might be ('scraps of paper') no complied with. Don't let men deceive you under any promises in future races, but let the future take care of itself. Future races will come up later on, and on the race track they only have one race at a time. I understood that when I entered this race some one said he guessed I thought I was not dead enough and through I would kill myself deader. To those who think that because I have not been a standing candidate for office all these years, I am dead, let me say that I am not dead but have only been sleeping. If they think I am dead I hope the people will help me convince these fellows on August 2nd that I am the runningest dead man they ever saw. My opponents have both been in the Legislature once. I have not had this honor conferred upon me. If you think me capable to represent you, and that I am worthy of your vote, I beg you to vote for me, and if elected I promise you the very best service I can render you. Sincerely your friend, J. B. Hollon."

1942 LETTER FROM JAMES BUCHANAN HOLLON
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 8, 2020
James Buchanan Hollon wrote a letter that is dated September 28, 1942. That date is in error, as the postmark is stamped September 21, 1942, and he died six days after the postmark. The letter is written to his daughter, Mrs. Emma Rowe, and the address on the envelope is 433 South Oakley Boulevard in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. The original letter is in possession of Donna Robberecht. The following is a transcription of the letter:
"Hazel Green, Ky. Sept 28, 1942. Dear Dear Daughter, Time speeds away away away and it seems but a few days since I receved your letter of Aug 10th. Am sorry I did not answer sooner. Well as for potato patch it gave something to do and I thought I had rather work in my own tater patch than some one else's gaden for it is pretty hard for a man whose life has been a busy one to sit around and see so many things that needs to be done and not do something if he is able. So I suggested to Daisy last spring that if she was willing I would like to raise potatoes on the corner lot where Days Stone rised to be so she finally consented to it. Now mind you I never thought of her charging me any rent at all as I had done so much for her untill in July when I commenced to dig my potoatoes. She says it to early to dig them they will grow a lot yet but if I wanted to dig my part [looks like part?] that I could dig a row and leave her a row. So I stoped diging and at that time could have sold them as new potatoes and got $2.20 per [hard to read] pounds. So when I finally dug them I could sell them for a dollar + fifty cents. I have not sold them yet and may not till next sprint. I planted corn between the potatoes and it is fine and the other day asked me if she was to have half of the corn and of course I oh yes. So James is feedding the corn to his hogs and will pay me for half of it. You asked how I could how corn and walk with stick that was easy I would with stick till I got the hoe and then could brace myself with hoe handle. Will has been away since the first day of June went down in Estill Co. and had [word hard to read] hole drilled and he went down to Louisville and Mr. Stoll who has an oil refiner [then?] got Jim to locate a well about 15 miles from Louisville and Jim is looking after that well now and Mr. Stoll says if the get a well there he will the [hard to read] on his feet. If Jim dont come home think I'll go to Campton and stay with Ted. Well your cousin Will Hollon's wife died last Thursday and was buried here yesterday. She had a second stroke. Mrs. Coldiron has been very poorly for a while. I am having good health by my life is weak. Hope Caroline got the birth certificate OK. Write me again soon. Your loving father, J.B. Hollon. Over. Elizabeth stayed at home two weeks and went back to her work. The sabatours got what they deserved. I think Allies will win but no one can tell how soon."

1952 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ON JAMES BUCHANAN HOLLON
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 8, 2020
The following appeared in the Courier Journal newspaper from Louisville, Kentucky, USA, on Sunday, August 7, 1949: "Liquidating a Heckler. When James Buchanan (Uncle Buck) Hollon contracted political fever, during the 1880s, he made his initial speech from the steps of the old Methodist Church in Lancaster, just across from the Courthouse. There were some in the audience who wished to discomfort him, and make him appear ridiculous. One of those was a heckler who emitted a few whoops and hollers and finally yelled out, 'I'm a bulldog from Bath!' Which was ignored by the speaker until it had been related the third time. Then Uncle Buck left the planned path of his speed long enough to say, 'You may be a bulldog from Bath, but you act like a feist in high rye.' This brought an outburst from the listeners that the heckler was squelched and slunk away. Mrs. Lennie Hollon Land, Lancaster, Ky."

The following appeared in the Courier Journal newspaper from Louisville, Kentucky, USA, on Sunday, February 24, 1952. "Multipartite. John Hollon was born in Estill County, Kentucky, in 1820. His son, James Buchanan Hollon, was born in Breathitt County in 1857. His son, James I. Hollon, now of Hazel Green, was born in Wolfe County in 1883. Yet all three were born in the same house on Holly Creek. This could be because Breathitt County was formed in 1839 from parts of Clay, Perry, and Estill Counties, while Wolfe County was established in 1860 from parts of Breathitt, Morgan, Owsley, and Powell Counties. Mrs. Lennie Hollon Land, Lancaster, Ky."

1969 NEWSPAPER MENTION OF JAMES BUCHANAN HOLLON
Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated February 8, 2020
The following appeared in the Advocate Messenger newspaper from Danville, Boyle County, Kentucky, USA, on Sunday, November 30, 1969. The article was written by a daughter of James Buchanan Hollon.
"About Those Good 'Ole Days, by Lennie Hollon Land. In 1905 and again in 1909, my sister, two brothers and I attended the public school at Hazel Green. Our father, James Buchanan Hollon, had boarded with a cousin, Steve Swango, a mile or more from the little village and attended a 'subscription school' taught in the same building by an itinerant educator, in 1870. Papa was thirteen and not big and strong enough to work on the farm.”
“That building was used until WPA days (Works Progress Administration). The concrete block building built then served the district as a public school until the recent building of the Red River Elementary school, not far from the once popular Swango Springs, a mineral watering place, similar to but not nearly so large as the Carb Orchard resort.”
“To his dying day, Papa could recite the orations and verse he had memorized for the 'exhibitions' (entertainments) which were held at the end of the school terms in the 1860s and later. 'Thanksgiving Day! Thanksgiving Day! 'Tis then our nation tries to pay. It's heavy debt of gratitude. For bountiful supplies of food. It's many blessing, rich and rare. We gladly would with others share.’”
“Thus, we primary children sang at our Thanksgiving program under the direction of Miss Nevada Nickell, a daughter of one of the school's trustees, show as one of the community's two physicians. The words were sung to the tune of 'Beulah Land,' a hymn descriptive of Heaven. On the same program the older pupils sang 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic' easier to sing and to remember than 'The Star Spangled Banner.' Whenever I hear the 'Battle Hymn' I sit again in that old schoolhouse and am thankful for those experiences. We didn't hear much about Thanksgiving outside of our schoolrooms then. Some hunters went after the rabbits.”
“A neighbor whose wife helped my mother care for my baby brother, brought in several rabbits which made the best eating ever after the meaty hams and thick backs had tenderized by freezing, hanging in a tree in a tin bucket, not in a refrigerator or freezer. Those now commonplace appliances had not then been invented, so far as mountain housekeepers were concerned.”
“When teaching in Garrard County, I soon learned that Thanksgiving was expected to be butchering day on the farm. The scalding box was readied, the poles set properly for hanging the scalded and scraped porker; men and boys dressed in appropriate warm clothing, fires were set to heat the water for scalding, and to help the workers keep from freezing.”
“Women reading the kitchen or the wash house, maybe both, for the lard rendering, the sausage making and meat canning. Such work was apt to be a family or neighbor with neighbor cooperative, even before farm people heard that word. Going one morning, to assist my good friend and neighbor, Mrs. Kurtz, with the sausage making, I waited for our turn to get our task. Boys did like to be around at hot killing time! Teachers did not take a day after Thanksgiving holiday then.”
“Warming myself in the cosy family room, George, the Kurtz's youngest child, came to my chair side. I was interested in his school work, so I asked, 'Can you count a hundred or not, George?' He looked into the fire, studiously, and then replied, 'No.' I noticed he had a long black stocking wrapped around his throat, the usual procedure when one had a sore throat. I also noted that the boy was enjoying the various activities more than one would expect, considering the throat wrapping. Without considering the consequences, I asked 'Is your throat really sore, or are you playing off so you could stay home today?' Those dark eyes flashed an appeal as he said trustfully 'Don't you tell Papa!' Of course I didn't! He had a happy day watching the butchering finale from a window most of the time. He'd be present next school day, equipped with new stories to tell.”
