Note: RESEARCH STANDARD APPLIED Researched by Timothy J. Barron, updated June 19, 2021 James Ignatius Hollon is my maternal second great uncle, which is via common ancestry with James Buchanan Hollon and Isabellah Caroline Elkins. James was initially identified in the book "Genealogy of Hollon and Related Families: Early Settlers of Eastern Kentucky and their Descendants,” which was written by Clay Hollon, and was published in 1958. Based on the application of recognized genealogical standards of proof, the descent of James Ignatius Hollon is sufficiently established beyond any reasonable doubt. Barron, updated June 19, 2021 The following appeared in the Lexington Herald newspaper from Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky, USA on Monday August 24, 1914. "Wolfe County Farmers Adopt Modern Methods. Begin the culture of Alfalfa along scientific Linds of production. Good Roads needed. Farmers can't get to market with produce from field and garden. By Sherman H. Stivers. During our vacation state of ten days at Swango Springs, Wolfe County, we had an opportunity to closely observe and study 'mountain agriculture' and the needs of the mountains for a broader development of the agricultural and horticulture possibilities and for a broader enlightenment and understanding on the part of her husbandmen of how and when to market her products in order to get the best results from a monetary standpoint. The future success of agriculture and horticulture in Eastern Kentucky lies entirely with the rising generation of young farmers who have caught onto the idea of modern ideas of agriculture and through a spirit of progressiveness are putting them into practice.” At Hazel Green we met James I. Hollon, postmaster of the village, merchant and farmer. He is progressive and up to date in everything and the day we talked with him he was busy sending his first tract of land, and perhaps the first in his county, in alfalfa. The tract of land contained one acre. Mr. Hollon limed the ground with crushed limestone from the Blue Grass, inoculated the soil from a bushel of dirt taken from a field of alfalfa, besides adding to the fertility of the soil by broadcasting 500 pounds of rock phosphate and the hauling and spreading of fifteen tons of manure. Mr. Hollon is a daily reader of The Herald and Blue Grass Farmer and is making advanced agricultural methods a study. It is a treat to hear him discuss the possibilities of his section of the State and the wonderful development that is going forward. 'The crying need of my county, as is that of the entire eastern section of the state, is good roads,' said Mrs. Hollon. 'We can not reach the markets with what we produce except within a mile or two on each side of the railroad, hence no effort is being made to develop the growing of fruits, poultry and truck garden supplies beyond the immediate needs of our own wants,' continued Mr. Hollon. Mr. Hollon was asked to give the prevailing local market prices for farm and table produce and said such supplies could be bought at the following prices.” “How Farm Produce Sells. Eggs, 10 cents per dozen; butter, 15 to 20 cents per pound; country cured hames, 16 cents; apples 20 to 50 cents per bushel, and all kinds of garden vegetables at about half the price at which they sell in Lexington. The future of Wolfe County, when it does awake from the present lethargy, will mark by leaps and bounds a development little dreamed of by those who now, with generous hospitality, compose its citizenship. With oil, coal and natural gas underlying its mountains, hills and valleys, with plenty of areas yet standing in large and small timber, with thousands of acres of tillable land that oily needs rejuvenating by modern methods of fertilization to give a fertility that will produce crops equal to the Blue Grass and other favored sections, and with mountain sides capable of producing millions of fruit trees from which trains loaded with the products of the orchard and vineyard may be sent forward to the city markets are some of the near possibilities that lie at the doors of Wolfe County farmers and fruit growers.” “It would be surprising to many to know that in Wolfe County are produce mules, horses, cattle and sheep equal to any produced in Blue Grass. We saw at Hazel Green a pair of 3 year old mare mules for which the owner refused $500, and we saw 500 castles pass through the town enroute to the Blue Grass market, all fine high grade stock. Wolfe County farmers sell no provender. The feed it to their cattle, sheep, hogs, mules and horses and drive it off to market. Give Wolfe County a system of good roads and her farmers will spring forward with a rush in production of crops and fruits that will put the Blue Grass to shame. Give Wolfe County a system of good roads and open her mineral waters and other products to the markets of the world and thousands of people from the Blue Grass will visit her domain in automobiles in search of health and investments and bring her into the limelight as one of the foremost counties in the state.” 1917 NEWSPAPER MENTIONS OF JAMES IGNATIUS HOLLON Researched by Timothy J.
